I am sure this has been answered zillion tis but low battery on phone.. no time to read through

how do u register and insure a vehicle in state where not resident. Would I need to be a resident?  I can switch residendency if needed

Can I sell one with michigan title in nevada?
Oil leak is getting worse, knew this would happen wanted to buy vehicle out of snow belt.

If anyone is selling a van on west coast or knows of one appreciate being steered towards one.

Will be selling a GMC Sonoma 70,000 miles with oil leak!

Tips on slowing leak appreciated

Also if anyone knows a place to take it to, mechanic in reno are would be awesome, know I am asking alot here. Thanks!

I mean a place that would look over a new vehicle not fix the old one

I have money, not going to get stranded or have to be bailed out :). I knew this was coming ?

I bought a van in TX while I lived in FL. TX sells the plates with the vehicle, so I bought it, drove it home, went to the DMV and switched everything over. Check with your state and the state where you're buying to see what the rules are there.

you can buy or sell a vehicle in any state. I used to know a few mechanics south of you in Minden but they retired years ago. highdesertranger

Never mind the slowing the oil leak it is transmission fluid and I think the autozone guy and i over filled yesterday, big puddle on the ground, I freaked, sorry. Do need to buy another vehicle though, so much easier in a van for me, spent last night in truck stop,. In heat in front seat yuck, no way am I climbing in back to sleep unless camping

What about if you buy a vehicle in a state with no sales tax while you are a resident of a state with sales tax but you plan to use the vehicle only in the state with no sales tax?

It doesn't matter where you plan to USE the vehicle, it matters where you plan to REGISTER the vehicle.

In NY, if you bring in a vehicle from out-of-state, NY will charge you sales tax on it's fair market value as part of registering it and getting NY plates.

Instead of asking vaguely general questions, try going to the DMV web site of the state you plan to register it in and see what they say about it

Went to dmv site right after posting, was partly checking out if this tribe thing really worked, and who could be trusted. Was on low battery. I am more than capable of solving this myself. Always have, seeing what doing it in community is like. Has its pros and cons like everything else.

If you register it in the tax state you'll probably have to pay tax on the purchase price.

If you CAN register it in the no tax state !
You might have to move there ???

Don't overfill it. Go under and see if there is a leak coming from the bolted pan in front of the trans. or the rear trans, tail shaft. No problem if from the rear, easy replacement. If you drive it on a ramp, you might see some leakage. But you be able to tell, the old oil and dust.

Dang, I swear I posted this on a different thread.....

I was thinking about buying a truck in the lower 48 and driving it to Alaska, then applying for residency in Alaska.   We are currently residents of Washington state which has a 9.x% sales tax.

If I bought the truck in Montana or Oregon, which have no tax, I was wondering if there was a way to drive it to Alaska while skipping the $1500 Washington would want to register it there.  I can research all of this, just thought I would ask since the thread was on topic.

Thanks will go look. Been parked on incline since yesterday

If a dealer is involved you would get a 30 day temporary plate.

Not sure about without a dealer. It may be possible to get a temporary movement permit from the DMV in MT or OR to drive the vehicle to your "home" state.

Check the DMV in each state as part of your decision.

Arizona has a 90 day "drive off" temporary license for motorcycles. IDK about other vehicles.
