Earlier today, while folding laundry, I inhaled a cough drop. I was fortunate in that it lodged high enough in my throat that I was able to cough it out. It was pure luck that it didn't go farther down.

Yikes, choking is awful.   I had a bad scare with choking once myself.  I thought it
was going to be 'curtains' so glad you got thru it.

No doubt. Even worse while you're driving down the road! Don't ask me how I know.

One of the episodes of HBO's six feet under started with a woman choking to death after biting an apple. I've had it happen to me several times, carrots, apples or something else. The first thing I do is control the panic and then look for something like the arm of a couch so I could do a self hiemlich. so far so good,.I suspect anyone living alone has experienced it at some poiint.
