Bringing your Dad to see cars ?

1999 toyota sienna runs good - $2350                    181 k miles.

i was ready to buy but my Dad says the van wil die on the high way
& he dosnt want to com pick me up.

i said theres another van @ a dealership $ 5 k he'll pay half?
he said he would help me out.

@ the dealership is 150 k miles.
But dad says 100 k is the most U want to mess with.

I know Sienas can last 400 k.
Having a friend come along with is good bargaining power.
Cause dad said $1000 for new wheels.

So I told the seller ok, $2350 - $ 1 k so we're up to $1350.
Seller didnt look happy but didnt say anything.

Wow! So I hav a leg to stand on when I low ball cause my dad
is the car expert !

& the seller's wife was scared to meet some 1 from online . .
so she didnt say much.

She was sittin in the passenger seat
lookin worried.

BIG MISTAKE....... The hands down worst POS car I was ever talked into buying was when I let my father influence me. His desires had no match to mine at all. Took me three years to pay that lemon off to the point I didn't lose money trading it in. Didn't make any either. From then on I chose my vehicles based on MY needs and desires, no one else's. Live your own life.

Yeah. My parents' needs/desires for a vehicle R

vastly different from mine.

Guess next time I'll go alone.
They say always bring a friend but usually they're
studying / with GF / wives etc . .

Sorry U got that lemon.

My Dad helped me buy a couple of my vans. He had a good eye and was a great negotiator. Even more importantly, he taught me how to shop for a car on my own.

My dad always looked over my vehicles... after the fact. :) Hope it goes well for you. :D

Come to think of it.  I could have turned around & sold the van

for a profit !  "Ce le vie"

I'm going to still look for vans and go with the vision I have
to make a camper van

My kids send me links and ask my opinion. I give it to them, and they respect it enough to listen.

But then they make their own decision.

Mine too!

Here's the BIG question....

Do you appreciate and value your father's opinion??

I didn't get along very well with my father. He came from a different mindset, and bought into corporate America...(which worked well for him, but that's something I'd NEVER do!)

I have very good communications and connections with my adult kids, and they seem to value my opinion for vehicles, and I've helped them buy several of them too.

Well I'm a lil annoyed I missed out on a 99 Sienna for $2300.

Now Dad wants to loan me half on a 02 Sienna $ 8 k
 100 k miles  @ a dealership.

I don't get along great with my folks.
I know that the old toyotas have a lot of life in them usually.
You could buy 2 old ones for the price of a used one @ a dealer . . .

I sorta figure 225,000 miles trouble free, I would have looked at that the same way, if I could have for it for $1,700 I would have been all over it, $2,000 I would have been very tempted, $2,300 it would have had to have been what I really wanted and I would have had to feel good about the owners.

My dad comes from a time where 100,000 was all a car could ever be expected to give you so he's not the dude I would take, he's way behind the curve on that though he did buy a new Forester last year so he's finely catching up. Anyway, don't beat yourself up on it but I would have felt that out and moved on it, a 2002 for $8k is flat out stupid, just stupid! No way on earth, that's 13 years old! You could buy the 1999 and rebuild the entire thing, motor, trans, tires, all of it with the $6,000 you saved.

My late father was a dedicated Ford man, and hated any other brand. I hated Fords, and liked the Dodge and AMC brands. So our interests were always at odds right off the bat. I liked musclecars at the time, he was into trucks, vans and grocery-getters (for Mom). Thus the inherent problem. He also knew less of the mechanical aspect than I did. So no real help there.
All depends on your situation I guess.

Some Auto Ins Co have DMVs inside.

My fav makers
Toyota and all the Japan plants.

Thanks Dad for all the good advice

If I followed Dad's advice, I'd only have bought new cars.

I've had mixed luck with used cars, so I'm not saying he'd be wrong, just that my budget and his are vastly different...

nahhhh

as soon as you drive a new rig off the lot, they drop $10K in value!!

I'll let someone else take the hit.

My father hated it when I traded (his choice) a new 1979 Mercury Monarch POS in for a well-used 1975 Pontiac Firebird. I tore the frontend apart removing all the airconditioning junk (nonfunctional) after having had the waterpump fail in Bumwad, Miss. on a Navy trip. The smog pump locked up too, so ALL smog gear came off. That car ran like a scaled dog with about 150lbs of useless junk removed. We painted it, and I added some mods - BIG tires on back and traction bars. I dearly loved that car, and put on nearly 200,000 miles by the time I traded it off - surprised I got the trade-in value I did, it was pretty roached. I abused that car, but it kept on going like the energizer bunny!
BEST car I ever had.
But now I have grown out of the muscle cars, drove a wee Tercel for awhile (Mother's hand-me-down), and then went truckin' for a time, and now have gravitated to something I can live in for a time. Gotta love vans! :)
