Hi.
I bought my first guitar today. I'm gonna play (quietly, with headphones) it in my car when I car-dwell.
Does anyone play?
If so, how long have you played? Can you read music? What is your favorite genre?

I prefer listening to Wes Montgomery, Tal Farlow, Kenny Burrell, Bobby Broom...
I played drums for 32 yrs. but kinda got tired of playing (plus you can't really carry a drum kit in a car & play).

I ended up buying an AXL Badwater 1216.

I'm gonna buy this ZT Junior Lunchbox amplifier & hook it up to my cigarette lighter:

Gypsydreamer, that's a good looking guitar. I bought a guitar a number of years ago but I had no talent or musical "sense" so I sold it to a co-worker who played guitar. My Dad played guitar, piano & organ. He was the musical one of the family.

Growing up we had a 1908 player piano. We spent alot of money to have it restored to working conditon. That was a fun piano to watch play. We lived in Rhode Island and every year the piano needed to be retuned. That's the nature of pianos.

My Dad owned a Gretsch guitar he bought while he was in the United State Army Air Corp. This was in the mid 1950's. He would play it a few times a month. At one point he decided to donate the guitar to a charity. He stopped playing it due to health issues. When he brought his Gretsch in for an appraisal at a local guitar store my Dad received the shock of his life. According to the store employee my Dad's guitar was worth, I'm not kidding, around $65,000.00!!! Upon hearing that my Dad had second thoughts about donating it to a charity! He kept it! My Dad had the guitar, case, and other original items that came with the guitar. He even had the receipt when he bought it on base. When my Dad passed away sometime later the guitar went to my nephew who plays in a "speed metal" band. lol

All those years my Dad had no inclination that his guitar was worth so much.

I play, over 20 years. I switched to the Ukulele since they're a bit more portable. I don't really have any one favorite because I've tried out so many styles, but if I had to pin it down. I would say blues

Unfortunely, I discovered I have no musical ability whatsoever. I tried my best but you either have some "ability" to play or you don't. I had a friend who was showing me how to play guitar. At some point he told me that I wasn't getting much better than the basics. I was terrible guitar player. I tried anyway. What the heck! lol

Now, it's piano. Sadly, it won't fit in the van, lol! I did get a battery operated portable keyboard for the van (with headphones), cheap cheap cheap, but it sounds so awful compared to my beautiful piano that I'd rather not play at all than play that keyboard. The piano is the main reason I keep my sticks/bricks.

There was one additional benefit to having a player piano. We had a neighbor across the street who would throw parties during the day and blast their stereo very loudly. When this happened my Dad had a novel approach to dealing with that problem.

My Dad would tell me to open the front door of the house and turn the player piano on. He'd tell me to play as many songs as I wanted. That was a dream come true. After 8-10 songs played on the player piano the party across the street mysteriously disappeared. You'd be surprised how a few songs played on a piano will clear out an annoying party. One of my favorite songs to shut the party down was the "Beer Barreled Polka."

That was a great piano to watch play!

I have no musical "ability" either but I can read music and follow instructions and I love it so much, I play for my own pleasure. In my head, it sounds good. In actuality, not so much. I record it once in a while as a learning tool and I always think, "Oh, YUCK! That's what it sounds like? Needs more work!"

And $65,000? Wow! That's downright scary!

I have no favorite genre, though. Right now, I'm learning classical. The really cool thing about my teacher is that we always talk about the composer, the history of music at that time, the personalities (as recorded in the books), how it has affected the modern music world, all sorts of stuff. Really Cool! I have learned much more than just "how to play the piano in 10 easy lessons". And it takes me about six months to learn a new piece. So what if you weren't "getting much better than the basics". Good enough in your head. Ever been to a karaoke bar? LOL!

Yup, when the employee at the music store told my Dad that amount his mouth almost hit floor. He had only guessed that it was worth "a few thousand or so." I'm the one who drove him to the music store. My Dad wanted his special guitar to go to someone in the family who played guiter. Darned, I tried hard enough but I was a dismal failure. I tried anyway! lol I even learned to read sheet music to some degree as well.

The few times I've tried karaoke I'm told, like most people, that I'm somewhat tone-deaf as well. You can't win 'em all! lol Some people were meant to play musical instruments, some people weren't! Unless I'm really in good "spirits" (if you get my meaning!) I don't even try kakaoke. I do once in a great while but that's the exception. It's fun trying all the same.

I started taking lessons n the third grade, and all the guy was doing was figuring out chords to songs I liked. After a couple of months I could do that as well lol.

I've played and sing for my own entertainment for about 48 years. Never got into really learning to play - just rhythm accompaniment. I'm good at what I can do, but can't make the guitar sing...

Very nice Guitar CongratZ!! I do not play but my uncle does and loved to listen to him as I was growing up. My daughter plays the piano and at one time long ago I played the flute LOL Hope to hear you play someday HuggZ

In another life, I played bass professionally for around 35 years. These days I tend to sit around and fingerpick on a un-amplified Stratocaster. I fully intend to throw it in the back of the van when I hit the road.

... actually, now that you mention it, a uke sounds like a great road instrument as well!
