Hi VanGirl,

Just to make sure I have this clear, is this how you suggest we set this up?

1) Amped Wireless A8EX Power Outdoor 8dbi Omni-Directional WiFi Antenna Kit mounted on top of van over rear tire area (http://tinyurl.com/d37yt48)

2) Coax cable from Amped Wireless external antenna connects to Hawking HSB2 Hi-Gain Signal Booster (http://tinyurl.com/cgddua3)

3) Cable from Hawking signal booster connects to Sabrent NT-H802N IEEE 802.11n USB - WiFi Adpater - NT-H802N (http://www.pcnation.com/web/details.asp?item=KT5750)

4) USB cable from Sabrent external adapter goes to USB port of computer

Yes except I think you could mount it in other places. I just put mine on top over the rear tire due to height clearance. I think it needs to be as high as possible and still be stealth as needed.

VanGirl

Hey VanGirl!

Its been a year since you started this thread and was I hoping for an update.

1) Anything new and improved for boosting WiFi or is your system still the happening thing?

2) They both cost about the same but how would you compare your Amped Wireless Antenna Kit to C.Cranes WiFi Antenna 3 antenna?

3) C. Crane says their WiFi antenna is NOT weather-proof and recommends you install it inside some PVC pipe as shown here. So I was wondering how well your Amped antenna has held up to the weather?

Thank you.

P.S. Is everyone seeing a "reply" and "reply with quote" button after each post on this thread? Just asking because I only see a "reply" button at the top and bottom of this page.

Sometimes, the easiest way is to (if you're able) instal a new card. I've noticed somewhat of a difference when using laptops with different cards. ..Willy.

I dunno.. Googled 'macbook pro wireless card' and it shows plenty of vids re. it having one. ..Willy.

I misunderstood your previous comment and thought you were referring to the removable PCMCIA cards that old Windows computers used to use.

I'm still unclear as to what you were referring to when you suggested a new video card? Was it regarding my 3 questions in Post #24 or was it the issue of how there are no "Reply" buttons for each post?

I was referring to, if the computer has an 'older' (or low performance) wireless card built in, replacing it with one that has better specs. Let's say the old card is A/B/G capable, switching over to one that supports wireless N, maybe even dual channel with twin antennas (might have to 'snake' an extra one in), could give much better performance.
My Dell Latitude laptop, with an Intel Ultimate N dual antenna setup totally blows away my mothers' cheap Acer with the Ralink N card when it comes to reception; same goes for my Thinkpad, which has pretty awesome reception too. All of them are about the same age.. just a lousier wireless card in the Acer. 'Course, I could upgrade it, but my mom doesn't use WiFi, so it's pointless. ..Willy.

Thanks Willy. I wish VanGirl would reply so I could see if she's made any modifications to her setup. Where are you VanGirl?!

Hi Stephen,
You spell Stephen the way my dad spells his name. Neat!

1) I recommend you use a 3' USB extention cable. You will need a SMA male to male cable from the Sabrent to the Hawking. My Hawking came with that one. Then you will need a SMA male to whichever connector comes on the stick antenna you purchase. It may come with one check to see before you buy.

2) The booster is powered by a AC adapter that comes with it. You can get a DC adapter for it. I just have mine wired into the inverter.

3) As I mentioned in an earlier post the Hawking only uses 500mW on high. That is not enough to even consider.

4) Yes the 5 Mile will work if you're on water. It is clean line of site. They have tested WiFi across the Great Salt Lake at 40 miles. In our vehicles in the suburbs I would feel safe in saying it will not do any better than what I'm using.

5) I'm not sure I understand your question. My Android works as a WiFi access point when no free WiFi is available (I have unlimited data). No router needed. The Android can handle 3-4 users connected via their wifi cards.

6) I have never heard of Millenicom. Before you signup find out about nationwide data.

7) See the other post - Yes load balancing will increase your speed.
If you have a dual antenna & adapter setup you can connect to two different connections. You can only do this with Win7 64bit or Linux/Ubuntu.
Maybe MAC I don't know. You can use your internal WiFi card as your second connection but only if it has a good signal.

VanGirl

Tkdplayer,
If you have unlimited data you may not need WiFi except when there is no cell service. Some of the places I live, work or play do not have cell service, not even Verizon which I think is the best. In some of those situations I have neighbors and friends that have internet connections and wifi at their homes and let me use their WiFi to connect to the internet. The road my cabin is on in NM does not have wired phone lines or cell service but my friends on the next road over have DSL with a WiFi router. NM and AZ can be a challenge for cell and internet service high in the mountains or far out in the desert.

you can get a window tablet for 64 or so on amazon and an alpha usb adapter for 20 something, outside antenna mount for 10, and have about the best you can do for hotspots without sertious financial investment. get you surfing anyway.

may need some sort of adapter for usb tho, it only comes with micro usb on the cheapy tablet (they have full usb on some models)

For wifi antenna long range, it is hard to beat a beam antenna. I have one with about 11 elements and can target a McDonalds from my car at a distance of over a mile and access their internet. With just a laptop and it's built in antenna I have to be pretty much in a parking space next to the building to get any connection.

What specific beam antenna are you using? Inquiring minds want to know!
