I'd like to make camp in a national forest and explore the local area in my truck.  Typically, do you guys feel comfortable leaving your trailer unattended?

I do all the time. I make a base camp and explore from there.

I do it all the time to, but go with your gut feeling. I worry more around large metropolitan areas. highdesertranger

I have had only one problem in 50 years of leaving a vehicle/camper in a National & State Forest and BLM land, sometimes for a week while backpacking; and that was close to a city.  Check with local authorities (Rangers, Sheriff) for any problems in the area as they will know if there are any problems.

Consider maybe also a small tent so it looks like more people are around instead of the trailer is there but the truck is gone?  Just a thought.

I do it all the time, although I am never 100% comfortable about it I have never had a problem with anything being stolen.

There is one exception, the national forest above Tucson, the easily accessible sites are used on the weekend by partier type people who come up to get out of the heat. They treat it like a beach, you get a lot of drunken, loud beer drinking types who leave trash all over. These people I don't trust, they aren't campers and don't care about the environment  They only go to the easy access areas, not way back.

I always set out three chairs and I leave the music on in my trailer. My camp looks like a group of people, not me by myself.

Put a sign in the door window saying
"Please be careful to not let my snake out when opening the door".......

That towel? looks like a marshmallow boy toasting a marshmallow !!

You do want some sort of a locking system so that the trailer cannot be towed away. I've seen a simple one that fits inside the hitch receiver.
