One of the blogs I read (travels with miranda) mentioned a new site http://www.boondockerswelcome.com/ . It seems aimed at part-timers who can offer a driveway spot to other members. Currently free, there are plans to turn it into a pay site.

I certainly understand your reluctance to get involved with anything like that again. I just want to mention that my personal experience with the couple behind this has been nothing but positive. We have only corresponded in connection with their series of Boondockers' Guide e-books, but in all instances they have acted with integrity and delivered more than promised.

By all means, read the fine print and don't commit to anything you're not comfortable with.
I used couchsurfing both as a guest needing a couch and a host offering a couch and had nothing but positive experiences. If the owners of "Boondockers Welcome" use a similar model to keep everyone safe and honest it should work. I've signed up. I have a driveway now and will be looking for driveways in the future.

Couchsurfing also as an RV/Driveway division now.

Here's something I got into as an RV-er. When I had my RV I got info from a company called 1000 trails, hence I'm on their mailing list. I got an email telling about tent camping (which I'm into at this time). For $245 per year you can camp at different locations (I chose Southeast with 24 campgrounds). After 30 nites it's $3 per nite. I'm on my way to Florida and will be camping all the way. I have a reserved campsite in VA,SC,and FL with showers, table and fire ring.
1000 trails.com.

We have relatives involved in Thousand Trails and have looked into it ourselves. Warnings have been put out that once you have a membership, you can't get out of it without selling the memberships. 1000T denies this, but there are first person stories out there - seems to be unscrupulous sales tactics rather than the company itself.

1000T (for RVers) divides the country into four sections. You pay an upfront fee of about $750 per section you wish to camp in. After that, there's about a $500 yearly fee. You can sign up for as many sections or as few as you wish. The annual fee is the same. Each campground has limits as to how long you can stay at a time - generally two weeks, from what I've seen.

I hadn't heard they had a separate rate for tent campers - or is that a primitive only rate?

Who are you on BDW? I tried to go friend you but couldn't find ya.
've had email correspondence with several boondocker welcome people in my area and they all seem just fine. I've met one and been to her house in Olympia. So, for me, I think it's an ok website. I do notice that class B's or smaller rv's and vans are a perfect match for this type of thing.

Nelda
