Now that you all have got me started on a blog, I began looking at ways to make money with one. Interesting. never get rich with it, but it might help with the gas money. Or keep me in chocolate donuts...

Between ads, affiliate sales, writing and photography, I should at least be able to keep busy. Pays better than writing poetry.
It can't hurt, except in the case where one has sooooo many ads it interferes with the page loading, I stop visiting. Of course, the chance that I would make an impulse purchase from an ad on a website is slim to none, so you might not miss me. I do have a couple friends whose ads I click when I visit because I know it generates a little cash for them.

There's two basic ways it seems: ads which pay per click (AdSense from Google seems the best) and selling products. ClickBank offers products where you make. A commission per sale; some seem very nice commissions. ClickBank is known to consumers and offers a 60 day return policy, and have a good reputation paying the advertisers. They don't seem to do any quality control with the vendors. They have a lot of vendors, and you can search by the area of interest your blog covers. A lot of the products seem to be those that were once sold in the back of comic books. Not all - I noticed one or two I wouldn't feel like a dork setting up a link to. Most of the commissions seemed to be around 40%

And you can sell your own products. Some sites accept written works which pay on a click to view basis, or have written assignments,. You need to demonstrate your ability to write well and conccisely. Stock photo markets.

Haven't checked out the greeting card business online.

AdSense does seem very good. I don't have an AdSense account but I read a lot of blogs. The Adsense ads aren't over obtrusive and they usually fit the subject matter. Another interesting option is having your own Amazon webstore. People who visit your blog can access Amazon through a link on the blog and then you get a percentage when they buy. If you have products that you really like you can do a review on your blog and hopefully people will click through to Amazon if they decide to buy it. http://webstore.amazon.com/faq-resources/b/2988390011
Good thought.I'll look into it.

Google is very meticulous about who they approve for AdSense. An established site meeting certain criteria, and there's a several week evaluatin process.

The nice thing about adsense is that it can be setup once and just left alone. If you continue posting and growing your site, it will eventually start earning you an income. I waited till I had a 100 followers before I set up adsense on our blog. My reasoning was to see if those regular followers would be bothered by me making the change. I was expecting they would give me feedback if they didn't like seeing them or felt they were too much etc. I put pretty much the minimum on and I have never had anyone complain about them.

You don't get your first payment from them till after you have accumulated the first $100 so it doesn't seem like "real" money until then, but it is. I have especially been slack with our blog this last year but it has steadily grown anyway and clicks happen here and there. We just haven't put much effort into it lately. We are starting to get back into it a bit more though now. I have to tell ya, the first payment was fun! It came at a time when it was needed too so that was nice. As far as it making a huge impact on our budget or finances, not so much, but I see how it could if we put effort into it.

Glenn, our friend from toosimplify, had about the same number of followers as we did maybe two weeks ago then do to a interview/article he was involved with, his followers pretty much doubled overnight and his traffic soared! Now he has over 550 which I am sure translates into more money through adsense etc. That kind of exposure can really give you a boost! He has done a few other interviews that were less effective too, but still probably helped. Marketing

I think Amazon is a great way to add income as well. I haven't done anything really with mine yet, other than setup a very basic little store on the blog. I will have to work on it one of these days and get it to be more useful to people. We have specifically bought stuff we needed through other's amazon stores though so they would benefit from it. I think that is really something cool to do for the people you know and are able to help. It doesn't add anything to the cost of the item, but does give your traveling friends a little commission boost! Bob Wells has a store - Hint Hint

You can also add an Etsy storefront on your blog like I think Katie did. That makes a ton of sense if you like crafting! I have a bunch of jewelry that I have made that I need to do that with. Also adding leather crafts to my hobbies so there may be another thing for Etsy. Driving traffic to the etsy store with the blog just makes good sense!

Hope that helps!

Yes it does... very much. Thanks for taking the time. I'm mostly trying to figure out what's going to work as a draw. Just set up a FB page for the site, but I'm not sure how I'm going to implement it, yet. The feeds are running to my personal FB wall, but I keep that small - just family.

When you post on FB regarding your blog "This is what wife and I saw on travels this weekend" then you catch your blog addy link and it will come up for friends to choose to go to with a click.
A way to keep some privacy-if that is at all possible with fb is to make a page off your main page-"Travel with the gyrofalcon". As people, friends click 'like' more of their friends will see it, it won't go back to you private fb page for strangers to see. You will just see that Aunt Mille clicked like and her boyfriend who you don't know clicked like but he still can't see all of your page.
Dragonfly
I haven't had time to make the change. There is now a Flight of the GyrFalcon FB page (another with a unique profile picture) but I haven't changed the notification feed over yet.

Still checking a wordpress manual about the 'follow' ... seems to only work with other WordPress sites, but it could be I haven't founfd the magic setting yet.

So much, so little time...
Soon as I get it straightened out I'll link / follow your guys' blogs.

On a humorous note:

Several nights ago i did a google search using several keywords the blog, and found one of my key phrases in a listing that wasn't mine. I went to it, and found my website listed with a group of falconry websites.

Hey it's a backlisting... right? lol

No way I could find to clue the webmaster in, actually.

I sure wish I knew more about the computer. I REALLY need to get a website for my jewelry, but I never learned how to use it for more than something like this, or checking my e-mail etc.. I didn't have a job where I was required to learn, or was taught about this crazy thing, what i know I had to fiqure out for myself. Ya'll are really lucky, being able to navigate your pc like that.

Judy,

Is there anywhere online that someone can look at your jewelry? Can you post a few pics for those of us who are curious???

Hi Angeli, how are you? I hope your doing better! Yes, I do have some pic.'s, but I don't want to hi-jak this thread. Where could I put them? Do you know how I could do it? All my really nice stuff is at the gallery though, and some of it I didn't get pic.'s of because I have a really crappy camera. I did just buy a new one last week and a tri-pod so I could take better pic.'s, just haven't yet. Let me know how you think I could do it and I will post a few. And thank you for your interest!
