Best Verizon Hotspot Device

Hi All;

Any opinions or recommendations on which Verizon portable Mi-Fi device I should purchase for a mobile hotspot?  I am leaning towards the Jetpak 5510L which has 4G LTE and 3G coverage.  Anyone with experience with this or other Verizon Mi-Fi compatible devices.  I intend to purchase it outright and get either 8 or 10 GB's per month, not get involved with their plans.

My plan is with Verizon and I use my Droid cell phone as the hotspot. Basically, I get the hotspot free of charge and it seems to work very well as long as it is in a 4G area. However, I've been running into problems with coverage as far as data is concerned and may leave Verizon depending on exactly why these problems are happening and seem to be getting worse each week that goes by. So I'd give Verizon a tentative okay for now but with reservations.

I bought a Jetpak 5510L refurbished on eBay for $27 delivered. I will go with the Verizon 8GB of data for $70.00 per month and see how it goes. As I have no 2 year commitment, I can cancel anytime and try something else.

My $27.00 eBay Jetpack 5510L arrived today.  Came with all original packing, documents and accessories.  Also came with a sim card.  I went on to the Jetpack site and configured it and bought an 8GB monthly plan.  Couldn't have been easier even for someone technologicly challenged like myself.

That's a great deal. Think verizon data prices might have dropped for some plans now. Have home internet unlimited at $60 a month, but 8gb for $70 is not bad competition.

Just remember that a netflix single movie streamed is 2gb. So you could burn out your data stream real quick watching netflix.

The opposite extreme is an internet radio playing RADIO PARADISE station at 25kbpm which would play all month.

Maybe the trick would be to visit Starbucks once a month and use their fast free internet to download some movies.

We watch a lot of Netflix and Hulu and my place, because we are trying to break free of Comcast and we like to bing watch TV shows. We're averaging about 260gb to 300gb a month. I don't even want to think about what kind of data plan we'd need for that kind of viewing. Probably cheaper just to buy DVDs of every single thing you want to watch and just be a season behind all the time.

When purchasing my plan I saw plans up to 100GB. IIRC it was about $700 per month for 100GB. The cost increases per GB as you buy larger packages. Doesn't make sense but I don't run Verizon, I only have an investment in their stock.

Yes you can buy DVD series and binge watch then sell them. The cost will be the shipping as long as you never buy a DVD that has no market value. And it has to be a factory original too of course. There are many used DVD stores in the area. And AMAZON has them available also.

Local pawnshops also sell used CDs and DVDs cheap. And games for those so inclined.

Just surprised your ISP does not shut you down with that level of use. That's 150 two hour movies per month.

We use Comcast, and they don't have a limit here. Some places that charge you extra if you go over 250GB

Not ure where Matt is but here in Los Angeles all of the major ISP's have no limits. Although I have heard of a few people from time to time that had been busted that had outrageous download volume that were of course downloading illegal content.

It's not uncommon here for a family to have two or more PC's that each could be streaming a netflix movie in HD at the same time day after day.
time Warner has recently increased it's base speed, basic packages now are getting upwards of 50 mgb's now. wasn't but a couple years ago I had to pay $50.00 a month to get 20mbs.

My home PC system is via CenturyLink DSL, and I watch some TV and movies via Netflix, Hulu and Crackle. Have no idea what kind of Gig usage I do, but it would break me if I tried it via my cellphone on Verizon! When I begin traveling, I will take my DVD collection, and trade and use Redbox as I go. And like I said earlier, hit the pawnshops for cheap used DVDs. I would bet that groups of van/RVers trade amongst themselves too, like I see them do with books.

Some ISP's do not let you know the download limits until you either ask or find it in the small print. ATT DSL where I live has 150 gig limit per month.
