I’m deciding on storage for my Volvo with roof basket and Ridgeline bag. To organize by category. I’m looking for opinions on whether to separate by bags or collapsing crates?

Bags can fit into irregular spaces better than rigid containers. Of course, you could use some of each.

If you can afford them I like dry bags as if something spills or if raining and have to unload.

Much depends on how well you can level things out inside of the soft bag carrier. Smoother surface on the top of the bag means less wind resistance, lower fuel cost and less potential stress on the zippers and seams on the bag. So maybe bin boxes will work or maybe individual bags will be better. You just have to do some test with how things fit and pack. Sometimes items may need the physical protection of a hard sided bin. No one but you will know what is going to work best because they are not the person packing up for the trip.

A few of us where just discussing this at the walker lake meetup. Bins are not great in small vehicles. they do not adjust to the space. :dodgy: bags do. However there are times you want the more rigid support structure for sorting your stuff. When you throw things into soft bags they get jumbled up. :s you can sort them 'by bag' but not within the bag, bins let you organize your stuff better within the bin.

My solution was cardboard/fabric "bedroom" shelfs from bed bath and beyond. The soft sides bend just enough to fit where i need them to fit but are still rigid enough to keep all my stuff (spay cans , bottles, deodorant, etc) standing and sorted without falling all over and making a big mess. It was a nice compromise imho.

I (attempted to, but they would not upload over mobile internet) attach some pics, my blue soft sided drawer-totes are awesome, they fit the space I put them into and are very versatile. The plastic tote you see on top is waterproof, but never fits anywhere and is always in the way.

Interesting that you would bring this up y'all! I'm "on the road again" for the first time since mid fall 2019. I was just now thinking of getting rid of these two tall laindry containers I originally thought would work well for conserving space and replacing them with these bags I saved from two old laundry sorters of which the frame I had tossed. I hafta figure this out before or after work tomorrow because I may need to keep my passenger seat on standby in case someone needs a ride somewhere.
