Astro for $400... deal or trap?

Not your bad on "annoying" her! If she wants to sell used cars, she shouldn't be annoyed if prospective buyers ask intelligent questions (as you did). Sure, it is only $400 but why waste your time and hers driving over there if it isn't going to meet your short list of needs? Grrrr!

Timing chain ...looks like a heavy duty bike chain.
(some are double row and last and last and last)

Timing belt....looks like a flat belt with ribs .
The lightest duty chain will outlast the heaviest duty belt.

$400 isn't a lot to risk if you're just looking for something to get a feel for dwelling
and it might even last quite a few miles too. (or it might not!)
Either way , I wouldn't spend a lot more to rebuild it and any interior things like a bed should transfer to a new rig without much trouble.
