I am thinking going that route before spending some time free camping in Death Valley.
I have been reading a lot about it. Pros and Cons. Outskirts with gangs (???)... I don't care to look over my shoulder too much! Having a car and towing a sidecar one has to stay behind when we explore...
Any "real" thoughts would be appreciated much.
Thanks... It's really not as bad as it might sound from some descriptions. The LOWs (Loners on Wheels) hang out in the southwest corner of Slab City if you're worried about where to camp at. I spent the night in that very area and didn't feel unsafe in the slightest bit.

I just spent a little time at the slabs with some friends I met at the rtr. It was an experience for sure. The cops drove past our camp a few times a day it seemed. Not sure why, I think it was border patrol and animal control. I felt pretty safe but most likely because I was in a group. We ran into some interesting characters to say the least. I think everyone should at least check it out.

Like everywhere, there are good things and bad things about the Slabs. But for sure you can go there and be safe and happy. I've never felt like I was in danger there. Camp a little further out in the midst of nice RVs with clean areas and you won't have any problems at all. Probably meet some really nice people who will invite you over. However, don't go to far out as it is beside a primary route for illegal aliens and drug runners. That has nothing to do with the Slabs, they are following the canal up from the border. Bob
We run into each other in the oddest places

I've parked up at the slabs a few times, a friend started "East Jesus". You def should check that out.
First time there spent a couple moons there, parked near East Jesus, living out of my van. The last couple times were on our way to & from Mex, also in the van. Safer than the cities!

You are going to stop when you get in the area Been following your New Mex adventure, Love that area, `specially the west of Albq area!

Follow this link to the pictures and comments about the Slabs... Just left from there this morning, sun was out and temps in the 80's... hope this helps... Oh and if ya dont want to stay in the slabs central, take Beal to the end and go right (east) along the canal about a mile for some nice out of the way spots... other wise there is nightly entertainment, music and folly... Go to sleep with the coyotes singing to you... it is not a place for everyone, but you will miss a truly unique place and people...

https://vanlivingforum.com/post/Slab-City-Pictures...-5700500?trail=15#13

We are there right now if you are nearby and want a "safe place" to camp. The slabs are what you make of it.
Being new here I had no idea what Slab City is so I did a few searches and came up with this. It is an abandoned World War II Marine barracks, Camp Dunlap. Located about 75 miles from Palm Springs, Ca and 40 miles from Mexico. A good description is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slab_City .
You can copy and paste these coordinate into Google maps or Bing maps. 33° 15′ 32″ N, 115° 27′ 59″ W If you use Bing maps birds eye view and rotate the view west, there are some higher resolution areas at the south end, you can see slide outs on some of the campers. After looking at all of this I had an urge to watch the movie “MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME”.
