Five people, including three teenagers,
have been arrested for their alleged role in a home-invasion robbery
and assault that hospitalized two people earlier this year, police said Wednesday

both 54, were beaten after three suspects entered their home on --- Court on July 22

remains hospitalized with serious injuries. "

How could this have been prevented ?

I'll be 50 one day.
It's nice how the teens respect their elders now a days eh ?

It can be avoided by becoming a boondocker and getting away from where bands of teenagers live.

That's kind of the point of this forum, getting away from those things. It isn't how to stay safe when you live in a house.

Bob

I say let's bring back chemical castration.

I don't read the news because I don't want to hear this depressing crap.

I didn't read the post, but I couldn't avoid reading the subject. I even resent being exposed to that.

I'm not going to rant much but this is another example of poop happens even in a house in a good area.  I know friends and family and people I meet at gas stations mean well when they tell me how dangerous it is for a single woman to travel alone and my camper screams out single woman inside. I'm most likely to get accosted getting fuel and candy at a gas station, even in a safe area. Everyone has the same chances of a robbery just off a major interstate, big burly truck driver or housewife.

I feel like a lot of you here, things happen in good places. I don't have stats on this of course but I'm willing to bet this community of van dwellers and campers  living in the middle of nowhere are much safer than living in cities and towns. Most human predators don't travel far from their own homes and have not been out in the country let alone down dirt roads with no street lights.

Silver,
There are a couple of observations I'll make and then give you a couple of suggestions (from one who is over 50).

1. The media picks up on what their viewers WANT to see -- I do not think it is a matter of the media deciding what to "feed" us but rather responding to what brings in an audience (and therefore ad revenues for them). Our society seems to have a huge appetite for all the terrible things that happen. The fact that a local story in any small town can now become national news via the Internet news sources, social media or just the overload of news cycles -- that fact piles on the impression that things are getting worse and worse. Because we have more and more brought to our attention.

2. Some things ARE getting worse. There's an old saying about the more rats in a cage, the more dead (or bitten) rats you get. Toooooo many people on too small a planet (at least in our cities).

That being said, what can you do? For my 85-yr-old mom, I've signed her up for a 5-star alert button. She wears it around her neck... it connects via Verizon cell towers and a real person answers if she presses the panic button. About $24 a month service charge. They send police, fire, ambulance or a tow truck.. whatever you need.

A search of something like "protecting your home" on Google will get you hundreds of idea.. once you filter out all the alarm companies. LOL

Bad news sells, and with today's communications technology the smallest story gets blown out of proportion.  Added to that many people today are raised "on the street" with no morals.   Big city, small town, or on the road, crime is a part of life.

Somebody did not have a Mom to teach them proper respect of others.

" crime is a part of life. "
Thats why I'm getting to the Rurals asap .

If I get bothered on the street :
I usually say no or no thanks &
walk away.

I'm not much of a runner .
I'd probably trip & fall.

historically speaking we are in by far the mellowest times in human history it's just that the media crams bad news down our throats, consider the romans, mongols, vikings, british empire, american indian to the europeans, europeans to the american indians ect.ect.ect. in the past this type of crime was common place and not even worth reporting on

to keep your self safe in urban environment is to have good communication with your neighbors, a dog and firearm will help too

Back in 1969 (I know it was a long time ago...) I was parked 5 miles outside of town in the rural hills, no homes around at all.  Nobody around that my GF and I could see.   In the back of a 1957 Chevy Nomad doing the wild thing when I see this pervert who has his face stuck in the back window of my Chevy wagon just enjoying the view.   He looked about 40 years old and scared the hell out of us.

So much for your theory...

Stuff happens in the Rurals too.

Every time I go into the Rurals,
people are nicer, more laid back more understanding.

I'll take my chances in the country / wilderness with
bears / wolves & coyotes & lions.

Trust me 66788 (like that's your real name LOL) the last place you would want to invade would be one of Mr. LooRead's campsites in the winter months in Florida.

When you have two men over 6'2" that weigh close to 300 pounds, a large male German Sheppard, a Belgian Malinois. with assorted handguns, assault rifles and machetes, that also look pretty creepy like extras from the movie Deliverance, no one would in their right mind would even think of causing ANY trouble.

my son has an interesting theory...

We, as a people, are dumbing ourselves down.

The people who live off welfare, are having more & more kids. The more kids they have, the more money the government spoons out to 'em.
They raise these kids with poor values, lead them to believe that this nation will take care of them, and they certainly don't send them to private quality schools.
When these children grow up, the cycle just continues on.

Now, folks who DO have any brains, usually have good jobs, and limit themselves to 2 kids. These kids are raised without desperation, they attend quality schools, they often go on to collage, and have no interest in welfare handouts.

Do the math. It's not very comforting. :(

Hehehe......  sounds like me and my buddy Bob.  But without the dogs.  But Bob is a workout fanatic, and a profssional athletic massage therapist - he knows where to hit to make it really HURT!

Check out the movie Idiocracy.  It seems to be a look into our future to me.  That is probably where he got his theory from.

Five miles out of town is not what I would consider to be the middle of nowhere

Maybe now, but in 1969 it wasn't.

Point being, you're not safe anywhere really.
