Hi! I bought a shitty but reliable minivan 4 days ago and moved out of my apartment (well, room I was renting) the same day and basically been living in the minivan ever since. I've been planning on this for about a year now although I wanted a larger vehicle ($). I've been homeless on and off for the past 7 years and this is my ticket out. Anyways, I'm in a strange city tonight (coworker's truck broke down & I'd rather avoid extra trips), and I shouldn't be up this late, but what else is new? Looking forward to posting here and glad the Cheap RV Living forums are back up. :)

Forgot to add: 1. Don't Fear The Reaper. 2. I got a driver's license specifically to do this (been a bicyclist most of my adult life), so driving is still a very new experience for me. 3. The minivan needs a lot of work, but I'm willing to put in what's necessary.

Hi CreepyLoser and welcome. I hope the work on your van goes smoothly. Are you planning on an urban setting or more rural? Best of luck to you with everything.

EDIT: lol as to your username, well we all have issues. I kinda like it for the uncomfortableness of it. Again, best of luck!

I just passed my written exam and am pracrpract driving with my permit. As soon as I get a licence I will start looking for a van. I hope to start traveling in June.

^^G'luck on your driving test GeorgiePorgie!

Oh, and: Great name I picked for myself, huh? :)

I wasn't surprised you have a van...now you just need to put a sign on the sign that reads, "Free Candy" and you're set!  :p

Was planning on urban to stay close to work, but now that you mention it, I do live in a mostly-rural area, so I might find a nice quiet spot out in the woods or something. I've been sleeping in my passenger seat (haven't had the time and space to figure out how to remove the back seats) and, obviously, not comfortable when there's people about.
Best of luck to you with everything.

Thank you. :) I know the stereotypes I'm dealing with, and this isn't my first time dealing with negative stereotypes, plus I like the self-effacing nature of it. If people don't like the fact that I'm a vandweller or whatever it's called, and don't have a legitimate reason to be bothered by it, such as being the property owner(s) of the place where I'm parked, then they can kiss my ass.

I'm actually seriously considering writing "Tits, search warrant, or stay the **** out." in marker on my driver's side and possibly other windows, or maybe even make it a bumper sticker if I can. (Dunno whether the police would really need a warrant to legally enter my vehicle, plus I'm not gonna give them a reason to anyways)

Nothing like making yourself a target...

Long story short, I let the coworker drive and he pushed the machine way too hard and now it won't start. I'm still vandwelling (that's what it's called no matter the vehicle's body type, right?) with no plans to stop, but not mobile for a while. Trying to make that time as short as possible. So much for driving around and enjoying my first weekend on the road (last weekend was too busy making this happen). Also so much for

I was in your position this past August, although without a way of driving a real car other than paying for lessons, which helped tremendously. I'm 33 right now btw. Good luck on your test and as a driver/vandweller. :)

First knock on the window just now. Seemed to think I had someone else in the vehicle (I don't... seriously considering never allowing another human into my vehicle again since the coworker's driving).

Maybe try this

I just now ghetto-rigged a clamp out of twine for a hose that has a split in it under my hood, started the engine, and pressed the gas whenever it sputtered (this was in park). This got it running sounding like a normal, mechanically sound engine and I let it idle for 8 minutes before I shut it off. After all the stuckness, mechanical issues, and lost time and money with this vehicle after that guy drove the shit out of it, I feel like I just conquered the world. It still has multiple issues, but this is a huge step forward if it'll last, and it feels really good. I didn't mean for this thread to become my journal or anything, but I wanted to post and didn't know any place better.
