European Automatics always have such weird looking shifters...

Not as weird as a 1961 Dodge's push button shift unit on the left side of the wheel. Park was enabled/disabled by a sliding lever, like a temperature lever. In fact, the unit looked similar to the heater controls on the right of the wheel. Some people (who probably should not have had a driver's license) got mixed up and the buttons became history.

There was a, perhaps apocryphal, story of a A/Gas dragster with a 426 Hemi hooked up to a Mopar A727 tranny controlled by the push button setup. When the lights on the tree went out (supposedly) the driver floored the gas pedal and pushed the D button. We, my brother and I, two teenaged drivers, did some things similar in the family car with a 318 two barrel with a 727. That tranny never needed service beyond periodic maintenance.
