The wire could have a 10 amp fuse at the positive battery end. That would protect the wire in event of short, and have lower voltage drop on that circuit. Then a 4 amp fuse at the positive fan end would protect the fan itself. Advantage would be easy to add more devices to that 10 amp circuit, each with it's own fuse.
