Wanting to increase the light and a feeling of home in our van we thought a table top lamp would be a wonderful addition. With the ever growing popularity of off-grid solar tiny homes I assumed a 12volt table top lamp would be an easy find. Boy was I wrong. With little success finding a lamp I decided to make one. It uses all of the original electrical parts from the lamp, but with some modifications now employees a 3157 GM LED turn signal bulb. The entire project came in under 15 dollars.  If you are interested in a better description of the build, break down in cost, and were to get components be my quest on my little page. Scroll to the bottom to see the lamp breakdown. https://curtedge.wordpress.com/diy-campervan/

Yeah we filled it up with little rocks and shells from our adventures. The down side was the rattle it makes when to road sets up certain harmonics. So I would advise against filling it with loose medium. Enjoy the road.

I just started looking for a 12 v lamp, and ran into the same expectation and lack of success. I did get a flourescent bulb to put into a trouble lamp, which will be plugged into the inverter. But I'd still prefer to use the cigarette lighter. I have a 12v fan, and a 12v extension cord. Now to find a 12 v light!
Have you by any chance come across one yet?

My original van conversion lighting came with T10 wedge base bulbs.  Many incandescent bulbs could be used, the brightest was a 921 or a 914 bulb.  194 and 168 bulbs are smaller and dimmer.

I don't use any incandescent lighting anymore, except in my Dash cluster so the original dimming function still works properly.

Right now my favorite light sources are homemade lights.  I took 99 cent store goose neck lights, fed slightly thicker wire through their stems, and installed some T20  base LED bulbs which claim to use Cree Emitters, could be counterfeit.

I love directing the light where wanted and needed, and not being able to see the bulb itself, and my lights allow me to aim them where ever and not have to see a retina burning led if I look toward the light.

I've no experience with the following linked product, but it is similar to what I employ:

There exists a LED bulb for every 12v incandescent housing used in any vehicle.  They are finally good and bright, and not too blue.

Here is a very overpriced LED light i bought in 2007.  Much too dim. I later added a PWM dimmer to it as I only use it as a reading light, and the dimmer the light, the sooner sleep can overtake me.

I pulled the guts out of this Module for the PWM dimmer:

Some regulated LEDS will not dim via a pwm dimmer. Usually these are LEDs with a wide voltage range, like 12 to 24v and can cause radio/ OTA Tv  interference.

This is my 99 cent store battery powered light retrofitted with a t20 Cree  12v LED.  It is quite bright:

Not so pretty, but very functional.

Draws 0.12amps at 12.8V.

Proving durable too, running 6 to 8 hours a night for the last year and a half.

My ceiling is white so Aiming this light at it gives a nice ambient light.  Aimed down at my table and it is an excellent task light.

Here was the original T20 bulb and 99 cent store LEDs

My original ' salt and pepper shaker' light fixtures are still employed in areas.  2 of them have Blue LEDs in them, two others up front have some very bright Cree based  white T10 bulbs in them.

Here is one of my homemade Speakers in the back corner of my van, suspended on Bungees.  the colors of the lights are richer in real life.

I've got 12' of red rope lighting spread around my interior too, not very efficient LED lighting but when the mood fits, night vision is not compromised.

I employ some of these too:

Those get pretty hot and are obnoxiously bright, and the quality is hardly astounding, neither is their efficiency.

Dozens and Dozens of options for 12v lighting out there, and more everyday.  I couldn't find what I wanted so i made it. Later on I found similar products to what I wanted.

I really like these.  They're portable, with many charging options, including solar, and they can easily be taken to where YOU need the light.

Mine are also dimmable, not sure whether this exact one is or not, and I have a second similar one that also includes an AM/FM radio.  Most often the solar keeps them charged all by itself.
