I just recently discovered this world of Car Camping, Boondocking, Van Life. It seems so Liberating. I admire everyone brave and confident enough to embrace this as a full-time lifestyle. I have recently purchased a Prius, and convinced my husband (initially begrudgingly and whom thought I was CRAZY ) to help me transform it into our new recreational vehicle. (And hopefully new lease on life) I look forward to learning as much as I possibly can, & am SO EXCITED for the FUTURE. Hopefully, one day I can get my husband to hang up his hat, sell it all & live as free as you All. Sharing your experience means the world to me. Thank you SO MUCH

Welcome to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

My wife and I can totally relate to what you said and we had planned on waiting until we had a van or trailer but found ourselves unable to afford such luxuries and since the need to hit the road has become to much to bear we're heading out with a tent. We hope to see you on the road. Good luck with your endeavors.

Good luck to you both, and welcome to the forums, although I can't imagine two of you being comfortable sleeping in a Prius....keep us updated on your progress.

Yes welcome to the forums. But this life is not as carefree as some people think it is. You leave the sticks and bricks problems behind and pick up a whole new set of problems. One of the advantages to this forum and other things on the Internet especially Bob’s sites is that there is help with this set of problems. And although I’m not a mechanic and I’m not physically strong anymore there’s no way I’m going to meet another nomad who needs help without doing what I can. We are a tribe and that is the major difference. I was part time for over a decade and I’ve been full-time now for one year. Lots of stress when it comes to the money but I wouldn’t change it for anything. Oh yeah I would change it if my wife would come back to me but fat chance of that happening.

Good luck with that Prius travel. I've done some car camping in my younger years and love the memories of places we went and things we did (myself and two homeschooling children.) We were in a tiny Ford Escort! I slept in the driver's seat.

Nature lover has it right - there's a whole new set of issues to deal with when traveling. It takes time to figure out the solutions, and adjust. One of the hardest issues to deal with is clutter. We have to downsize and refuse to take on more than we can comfortably travel with.

HI and once you get your car adapted how you want, if your hubby won't hang up the hat you can leave without him :) hit your own road adventures part time a bit and travel as you wish...hubby will survive at home LOL.....and yes it is very freeing!! One thing I love, you have your home with you on the road at all times, I just love that....bringing my own home everywhere I go!

Welcome to the CRVL Forums  :)

I've traveled and lived out of my Van(s) for years.  Not a full timer now but aim to be.  When I started there was no internet or Cell's and all I had was a Rand McNally Campground Atlas & Road Atlas.  I was able to get my hands on a paperback 8 1/2 X 11 titled "The Campers Bible" which was quite helpful.

So when on other forums in the past I put together a website showing how to set up a simple Van and have added to it since.  Those I created it for were interested in having a cheap & simple RV of sorts to go camping on the week ends, fishing, or hunting.  Some wanting to go touring while on vacation were interested as well.   So there is much you can do provided you know what to do.

You may decide to go to a State Park where there is camping and invite DH to come out to your site and visit you there. (then he can return to the sticks & bricks)  But this way you can get his toe into the water.

While here at CRVL,  I put together another website which is a Portal of information designed to make the Nomad life more Safe, Comfortable, and Convenient and can be used for pre planning or used "on the fly" while out there.  This resource was created to help with a lot of issues you'll run into while out there.

I'd invite you to check out the two links below to these websites.  Remember, you are starting out in a Prius, but in time you may wish to transition into another type of vehicle.

There is nothing wrong with a tent! I wish you the best if luck & happiness in all if your adventures!

"convinced my husband (initially begrudgingly and whom thought I was CRAZY ) to help me transform it into our new recreational vehicle"

"if your hubby won't hang up the hat you can leave without him"

There exists a possibility that that result is hubby's desire.

Caveat: I know nothing about anyone in this thread, or beyond.

Why even go there?  No need to push those thoughts.
You used my thought from my post to the OP.....I said leave without him.....but I also said to part time travel a bit and leave him home if it is cool with both of them, many couples do their own thing a bit in their relationship sometimes....so I sure never meant to leave your spouse or anything like that!!   just clarifying my statement I made.....I don't want what I said taken to this level ya know.

It's actually very cozy. It challenges us to consider only our most basic needs. We just started, but we are very excited about the possibilities.

I'm finding the challenge both humbling and Liberating. I have such respect for the full time roamers.

Honestly, I have such terrible anxiety. He's the driver. I could go stay the night at a local park I suppose lol.

No offense taken, it's all good. No worries ??❤️

It may not seem like much, but we did our Prius camper bed/storage conversion today. We removed the back seats & I was firm in covering the exposed seat wells. We covered in a flexible waterproof floor matting that I hope will make for easy clean up after each trip. We opted to leave the storage open on both the sides & front for easier access. I went with a basic drawbridge design for our platform extensions...these double as my cooking surfaces. They will connect to form a good size table out the back hatch for outside cooking or can be used as a single up front as a interior cooking surface for bad weather days. Our plan is to install a 2200W pure sine wave inverter under the stationary plywood platform along where the center bench seat would typically be. This leaves both back passenger wells for storage space. Removing the back seats also gave us an extra 2 1/2 inches of play behind the front seats when storing bulky items like an onboard fridge or roto molded cooler. It may not seem like much, but it added a large amount of storage for a Party of two! We will be adding lift out top lids, as we want access from inside or outside the vehicle in all positions. I will be fashioning a telescoping tripod as the support for the outside table. We forked out the money for the car shades produced out of Europe...I won't lie...they're INCREDIBLE. Tell me what you think ? We are greener than green newbies, just jumping straight in... If you see a potential issue, have a suggestion, ANYTHING...we would appreciate it all. New perspectives always spark incredible ideas! To be brutally honest, my biggest worry is my 12V. Being that my rig is basically a giant generator...am I ok with 2200W inverter?
