If you go without A/C, why do you?

At the moment, I can't afford to get mine fixed. Believe me, that's the only reason.

    Help me prioritize these fixes

I'm not looking forward to my upcoming June road trip from San Antonio to Albuquerque and back without AC. But the current plan is to only drive from dawn until maybe 11am or so, then stopping for the day and resuming the journey the next morning, etc. I'm thinking that ought to work. I'll bring...

    Help me prioritize these fixes

I have a few issues that need addressing on my 2000 Ford Expedition (and due to my lack of wrenching skills, I will have to pay to have them done professionally). Unfortunately, since I just got finished buying new tires and a new manifold, I'll have to have to schedule these jobs one at a time...

    Any problem receiving online income?

I still haven't shifted to the van/car dwelling life, but it may happen soon. I'm a little concerned because I'm a freelance writer who works for several different digital marketing companies -- most of whom pay only via PayPal or Stripe. How does the whole Patriot Act "you must have a real...

    Multi-Focal Prescription Eyeglasses

I use progressives for everyday stuff, including driving, but they're not ideal for the many hours of computer stuff I have to do each day -- the intermediate area is just too small and position-dependent. I have a pair of single-vision computer glasses that correct my vision at a distance range...

    My Progress!

Tell me more about the bear bags. I've been scared to try camping out in certain parts of the Southwest because of bears' legendary sense of smell. I imagine them responding to some ancient crumb of fast-food wedged down in my upholstery somewhere....

Notes from a "full-timer in training"

With one caveat: I receive my fees via PayPal for the most part, and a few of my clients pay me via direct deposit to my checking account. I'll need to make sure neither of these institutions gives me trouble after i pull up stakes and give up my permanent physical address....

    Ford Escape hybrid

Looks like there will be 2 different versions of the ford Escape hybrid: https://jalopnik.com/the-2020-ford-escape-has-two-hybrid-options-and-a-happy-1833744640#_ga=2.143289971.734578436.1554163719-1326655922.1553463035 What are your thoughts, car-dwellers?

Notes from a "full-timer in training"

For last couple of years i've been taking a series of 2-week and 3-week road trips in my Ford Expedition, partly for business purposes and partly to train myself for eventual full-time (urban) vandwelling. Here's what I've learned so far: -Truck stops and travel/visitor centers are my favorite...

Is it easier to urban stealth-camp if you sleep during the day?

I like truck stops because it's all so (a) obvious and (b) sanctioned. I never feel weird about parking next to a line of vans and cars with blankets or curtains in the windows. It's like, "Yeah, we're here and this is what we're doing. Big deal." One thing I did encounter recently, however, was...

Minivan Parking in No park overnight Walmart

I only had one security-officer issue at a Cracker Barrel, but I think that was because I had parked in the wrong area of a shared parking lot. He directed me to a Bass Pro Shop parking lot instead. But by that time, I'd been spooked enough to just drive to the local Flying J.  :)

Is it easier to urban stealth-camp if you sleep during the day?

It seems to me that a lot of the hassles related to urban stealth-dwelling revolve around parking overnight without looking suspicious. If that's the case, would it be easier to switch to a nocturnal schedule? (Assuming that you are retired or set your own work hours)? Your vehicle might still...

Changing from an Expedition to an E150 etc?

My trusty Expedition might make 300K miles if I'm very nice to it, but at some point in the future it will time to move on. I'm thinking I'll want to scale up a notch by upgrading to an E150/Transit/Express etc. What I can expect in terms of the different experience (assuming I don't modify the...

Does vandwelling make as much sense for me as I think?

I can work within my vehicle as long as it's not sweltering in there. I may have to snowbird to manage that issue.

Does vandwelling make as much sense for me as I think?

Right, I don't necessarily want to do something that's completely irreversible. If for instance I decided to return to apartment life, I'd need to figure out what to do about the gap in my tenancy history.... as for the vehicle (if I get another one), I'll want to buy something used but...

Does vandwelling make as much sense for me as I think?

I've been doing 2-week road trips to various parts of the Southwest and Southeast, and so far it's felt just fine to me. My only complaint, oddly enough, is a certain feeling of lack of privacy, but that's because my Expedition isn't because enough to really use as a residence; it's more of a...

Does vandwelling make as much sense for me as I think?

As I get crunched by rising rent costs, increased medical expenses etc, I keep thinking about making the switch to full-time vandwelling. The idea of buying a "house on wheels" for a sensible amount of cash is appealing, especially when I could be putting my rent money toward other things more...

Nighttime cooling for a Texas SUV?

Some sort of cooling vest would help. I've tried spritzing myself down with cold water, but I end up having to do it every few minutes. Not great when trying to get to sleep.....

Nighttime cooling for a Texas SUV?

I'm also willing to zonk myself out with sleeping pills if all else fails...  :)

Nighttime cooling for a Texas SUV?

It looks my base of operations will need to be TX for the foreseeable future, including my eventual switch to a "car-camping" lifestyle in my old SUV. I have no problem with this notion -- except from June through September.  :( I would only be using the vehicle to sleep in -- but Central TX...
