I'm taking the plunge - retiring the Fall of 2019

Cammalu...Nope, I'm not your neighbor; Visiting family in the northeast at the moment; more family to see in eastern KY on my return to AZ. Thanks so much for the invite to stop by! All depends on how hot the weather is when I get to that neck of the woods. I don't do well in the heat & will be...

I'm taking the plunge - retiring the Fall of 2019

I lived out of a Chevy Express passenger van with all rear seats removed for 4 yrs. I changed things as the months passed as I found better ways to organize things. You do the best you know how at first but it's a process & you'll make improvements as you go along. Probably the #1 item on a...

    New heartache

You are now free to do as you please with your life. I couldn't become a van dweller until my last husband and I were divorced. Because he wouldn't allow it. He thought I was nuts & needed medication. I've been a van dweller since 2013...guess I showed him, eh! ;-) All the best to you!

    Song suggestions for grief/hope?

capricci This isn't a song but I thought you could make use of a Dr Seuss quote: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." I'm no stranger to heartbreak. A coping skill I used in my 20's was to rephrase a line of an old Scottish fighting ballad which goes: "I'll lay me down...

    Anyone in Ehrenburg right now?

You say "there is plenty of firewood" where you are camped. If you are collecting firewood from the desert, that is not OK. not even if it's dead wood but especially if you are cutting wood from bushes. We must all try to leave the desert as we found it.   Back east I'm sure it's fine to collect...

    Anyone in Ehrenburg right now?

The dune buggy crowd will show up at Ehrenberg every weekend. Just not as many as when it's a holiday.

How Many Miles on Your Van??? Milage, too if you wish

203K on my 2007 Chevy Express passenger van. (141K of those I drove in past 5 yrs). Gets a solid 15 mpg but 17 possible & once 19. When I towed a lite travel trailer it only did 9 or 10 mpg.

    Don't feed wildlife

Anyone putting food out to coax wildlife into their camp for closer viewing should re-think that idea. (1) People food is not good for wild animals. (2) Animals who come into camps in searching for food become a nuisance and may need to be destroyed. Do you really want to look up to see a...

    Golf Cart Battery Hiss

Well guys....Thanks to all for your input. Here's the report: Nope, it isn't a snake. Yes, the black box is a controller. The highest readout I've seen is 14.7. Yikes! for my ignorance on unhooking the negative to the battery instead of disconnecting from the solar first. I can now understand...

    Golf Cart Battery Hiss

I have 2 golf cart batteries hooked up to two 150 watt solar panels.  Sometimes I will hear a hissing sound from one of the batteries.  Is it normal for a battery to hiss?  This is the same battery that had a mysterious black substance on the top of it when I was gone for 2 days.    When I hear...

Earlier BLM enforcement in Quartzsite [split from 2017 RTR in Quartzsite]

Suanne, in regard to any changes in enforcement in Ehrenberg: I drove through that area this morning. There is a high top van camped on the left just before the Y and a class C with a cargo trailer on the right soon after you get up the hill. I recognize these rigs as being folks who stay a...

Earlier BLM enforcement in Quartzsite [split from 2017 RTR in Quartzsite]

Suanne, I actually remember Rangers coming around mid Nov-ish last year when we were camped across that little wash & lots of folks were gathering in before Thanksgiving. There had not been a Camp Host on duty then. The Rangers came & issued permits. My wild guess is that it's now on their...

Earlier BLM enforcement in Quartzsite [split from 2017 RTR in Quartzsite]

I have been in Quartzsite for a few days. The Camp Host for the area where RTR 's are held is On Duty and had the US flag up today indicating he was open for business. I stopped in. Mike told me that Ranger Jim will be in Quartzsite the first week of Nov....making his rounds & enforcing the...

    Ehrenberg/Quartzite 2016/2017

Wagoneer, The same drumming tune going from sundown to 9pm every evening was a bit much to ask folks to tolerate in 2015. Nope, not a fan.

    travel/camp companion

I'm a 1949, low maintenance, somewhat anti-social Female, in reasonable condition.  Love a road trip!  I have done aprox 100K van dwelling miles in the past 3 years but am content to stay in one camp as long as possible.  I'm based in AZ but will be east of the Mississippi until October-ish...

Why was van dwelling the best choice?

Folks camping in NF and on BLM land are able to spend most of the day sitting outside. Van neighbors seeing you out, presumes you are available to visit and will wander over. Groups camping together may establish an evening happy hour or morning coffee time for socializing, sunrise or sunset...

Where in GA can I get high top added to Chevy Express

Bob, You told me once that there was a place in GA that will add a high top to a van for cheap. I've forgotten the town.  Do you know the name of the business?  I've had no luck wording a google search correctly to find this place.  Thanks!

    Struggling

Bitty, I woke up thinking of you this morning. I read this thread yesterday and am blown away by your situation. My thought today was that although you may have suicidal days, amazingly, you are hanging onto life with both fists. I cannot comprehend what your days must be like. Even tho you...

How do I clean battery terminals using baking soda?

Small correction to my post above ...I used inverter when it was the wires fastened to the converter that I removed first. Yes, Cindy, I'll be in Bob's bad graces to have done this when he wasn't around to film it. He's still taking care of some business at Ehrenberg while I've escaped to the...
