Breaking down in the middle of nowhere: Preparation

Hi all! I know it'll happen. I'll be in the middle of the desert and my van will break down.  How do you prepare for something like this? This is my thinking. Maybe you have better ideas. Make sure there is cell service so you can call for help. Have enough tools on hand to take care of easy...

    Vagabound's Build-Out - 1993 Ford E350 Box Truck

Fun. I can just imagine how you felt when the idea hit you as you were laying in bed. I do that all the time. My best plans come to me then. And I agree, how'd you stain the plywood? And is it Maple or Birch 1/4" or 1/2"? Glad you're doing well. The truck looks great.

    Vagabound's Build-Out - 1993 Ford E350 Box Truck

Looks like you've got everything in place and are ready to head off. Nice work. Really using the old noggin. Thanks for sharing all of your hard work. I'm sure many others will benefit from your experience. Do you have a cooler or fridge? Propane cooking? How are you handing the kitchen...

    2001 E-350 extended WB build

Great thread. I'm looking at getting a similar set up as you and doing a very similar build. So, I'm subscribed and following. Good work so far. Looks like everything is going well. You wired your solar panels in series. As long as you have a 40a MPPT controller and (ideally) 400ah of battery...

    Vagabound's Build-Out - 1993 Ford E350 Box Truck

Lookin' good there. You've put a lot of work into this. How will you secure things when you're on the road? Seems like while you're driving you'll be making some pretty music. Maybe some zip ties on the peg board will help. A cargo net that covers the board might do the trick also. That foot...

    Do you fish for food?

Thanks for teaching me about the Flip Reel. I'm certainly gonna try it out. Looks fun. Mike

    Vagabound's Build-Out - 1993 Ford E350 Box Truck

Hi Tom, Hang in there. I've read every post of this thread. Kudos to you for being able to have friends like these to help out. Imagine what we would do without the internet. Oh wait. People would know what to do because they wouldn't have had to rely on the Internet to ask others. Those guys...

    Hello from Japan!!!

Hi Justin, Vagabond told me you surfaced here. haha. I too am in Japan, English professor in Kobe, and will be moving back to the states next February 2018. I'm counting the days. I'll be looking for a van or class B in Southern California. I like the mobility, gas mileage, and lower...

    Do you fish for food?

I think this thread has made it clear to me that fishing for food just isn't worth it. Rules, cost, availability, skills, smell, and the hassle of doing it all just to feed me doesn't seem worth it. If I had a passion for it as a hobby, I might be able to justify it but I don't. Thanks for all...

    Do you fish for food?

Very good point and one I hadn't thought about; the smell. Hmmm. Cleaning everything just so I can have fish for dinner doesn't really attract me now that I think about it. It would be better just to buy and refrigerate or freeze if possible.  Thanks.

Bring out your cooks! Van/RV setups

I won't be able to make it to RTR until 2019. :-( Life takes a long time. It's like waiting for a wine to be juuuuust right. And yes, I prefer good tasting wine rather than the %$#& that's hurried and capped. :-) I think your idea is nice. I hope you'll be able to enjoy some good meals with...

Bring out your cooks! Van/RV setups

At 14ft+ tall, I think it might be a bit of a problem. Adding solar might get expensive. And the A/C bill... Geesh.  ;)

Bring out your cooks! Van/RV setups

That's some good eats. Thanks for the advice. I agree. A deep sink and a cover would really help. I'm trying to figure out how to add an island and granite top somewhere in my van.  :P

Bring out your cooks! Van/RV setups

Great story. Sorry you couldn't get your chance there. Being able to cook is a fantastic skill. Being able to bake bread has always been my most important skill. Who doesn't love a fresh loaf out of the oven, right? You're right about being able to work just about anywhere. I've often thought...

    WOOHOO! I'm Divorced!

Come on people. Let's gather round for a heapin' spoonful of self-appreciation. The kids have gone off to college and we don't have to deal with that anchor anymore. Can I get an AMEN? I did my job. I raised him. I paid for him. I don't have a guilt in the world. Do you live without the stress...

    Do you fish for food?

What do you think about this? I'm thinking of buying a float tube and throwing it out as like a kayak. Then, what if I attached an anchor made of a log with a longer rope attached to a rock to anchor me. Then I could just drop worm baits/sink to catch fish attracted to the log. I ain't a...

    Do you fish for food?

Yeah. I went to Humboldt State in the early 90s. We loved to buy salmon from the tribes. 32 lb beauties. Oh yeah. We canned them with jalapenos and were happy with saltines for a years. :-)
