I've been binge reading alot of "how to" info.  I really feel this would be a more fulfilling life for me.  I'm planning to get a van when I return to California (or someplace on the W. Coast).  Anyone on the East Coast of Canada planning to attend the WRTR / RTR OR travel to the West Coast of US for the winter? I desperately need sun all year long lol

It should be noted that you posted your introductory 'Hi' to everybody in the Women Only forum. The guys know better than to post here even if it's to only say hi to a newbie. Also a lot of the forum members view the threads by the category and wouldn't even bother to go to the women only section most times unless they saw something of particular interest to them.

So you are almost ready, eh? That's wonderful! Are you planning to do your own build?

I'm almost ready, but without a van. I'll be buying one soon and expect to be on the road by the end of March or April. Yes, I'll do my own build but I have a friend with considerably more woodworking skill (and all the equipment) who offered to help me, and she has been working on her own van and it is beautiful... so I won't be doing it alone - at least to begin. I expect to continue working on it for many months to come, as I travel.

So, what are your build plans? What part of California do you expect to live in? I will be going back to California ... as soon as I start traveling, most likely... though I'm expecting a stopover in Oregon first, to see my son.

Hello Almost There.   I joined based on all the friendly support the community shares and submitted my first introductory post in the Newcomer's Corner about a week ago.  So, then I posted intro in the Women Only forum today.   Thanks for putting out the welcome mat!

Hi Travelaround! It's inspiring to hear that other women are joining the van dwelling community. Don't forget your snow tires and insulation when you head out in Mar./Apr.    ........you have experienced help and the equipment too. Lucky you! Will you travel with another RV when you go west?
I'm still planning. If i do the build myself, I'll begin with the basics and complete it over time or, option 2, purchase a van already converted and renovate as i travel. I expect to start my journey in West LA - i might be able to convince a friend to let me stay in their yard temporarily until my house on wheels is ready. what type of van are you thinking of getting?

I'm already on the West Coast, just about. I'm a California native who moved to Idaho five years ago. I'll probably travel alone most of the time. I have relatives in Central Oregon, SF Bay Area, and near San Diego. I'm planning to buy a Ford Transit, and hope to install a floor before I start.

We just got a rude intro to winter here on the east coast lol It's great to have family "around". They are nice vans. Are you thinking of getting a older or newer van? I'm worried about breakdown.

I'm getting a newer van because I have no mechanical skills and want something that is less likely to break down often. Besides, all the Ford Transits are recent, as they've only been in the US a few years, I think, since 2015. You can find a lot of Ford Transits at sites like Carfax. This may be the only time I buy a late model vehicle so I'm seeking a high roof as so many have said they regret not getting one. This will be my tiny home on wheels. I own no real estate.

that is good planning. i always bought used cars and funds are extremely limited in any case so, I'll work with that. i hope to find an extended HT. will definitely check carfax. i think they give you a 12 mth. warranty??  i'll need a job before i join the van nomads. that's my biggest worry. are you going to create storage space in the floor?

There are ways for nomads to earn money - like Amazon warehouse (especially before Christmas) and other work camping opportunities. Amazon would give you a place to park. I can see myself trying something like that though I hear it is difficult because of company expectations.

Not sure what you mean by this. I plan to have a storage cabinet at the back of the van... and other storage spaces (not sure where yet). I'm going to try very hard to give away most of my possessions so I won't have much to put in storage, if anything.

Hello! Soon to be vanner here! I'm actually hoping to buy my van in the next week and plan to hit the road the end of April.

I live in Phoenix and I just don't understand how people deal with seasons! [emoji23] We have "hot" and "not as hot". I'm definitely going to be one of those travel with the weather people!

Same here. I'm hoping this will be my last North Idaho winter. Maybe... well, I'm looking forward to an Arizona winter!

I'm sure you'd laugh to know that I'm actually so cold right now and it's 54 outside. To me, that's freezing! I'm definitely going to need to buy some warm clothes and thicken this blood a little bit [emoji23]

Oh, I'll be in California next year too if all goes according to plan. It is my home state - I left in 2013 after 61 years of living there. I was born in Oakland. Anyhow, I have a blog called "Journey! California" and I want to write more articles for it. I've been saving this project for my retirement years ... the plan was to travel and write, and finally I have this opportunity.  

Now that you mention it - I just saw a nice van with a storage section next to and under the bed. It looked awesome ... something I might try if I ever get good at woodworking ... which right now I know almost nothing about it. However, you never know - maybe desperation will motivate me to learn how to fix up my van.
