I believe you've got that backwards. The 3rd gen Ford Transit introduced the body style in 1986. Mercedes Sprinter 1st gen came out in 1995, replacing the older TN van. (The first Ford van to use the Transit name was built in Cologne, Germany in 1953)
Now as far as marketing goes and introducing these euro vans to the U.S., Merc was first....but worldwide the Ford beat all the others and its DNA was used to clone all the others.
