I'm a newcomer to the whole idea of escaping the consumerist society and living self-sustainably in a van.

I've spent the past couple of years thinking about this as some back burner thought and in the past few months, more and more I realize I really want to go through with this. At this time I'm hatching my plans, collecting funds and shopping for vans. I have a few models I've been looking at and I hope I can learn new skills along the way.

I hope to also share some of the knowledge I already have and relied upon as a backpacker and lifehacker, but it might pale in comparison to some of the van veterans I've seen posting.

I found this forum browsing StP (Squat The Planet) - They are more focused on, as the name implies, squatting and hitch hiking.

Vandogs??

Yes, vandogs. I guess that's not the right term, whatever. I've seen a lot of other terms, but it's certainly better than "van bums" :p

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

Welcome.  I joined StP, but was kicked off for being critical of a thread that spoke about how to break into vending machines.  I had a friend who owned vending machines, trying to support his family, and am personally opposed to theft.  Call me "judgemental".

Yea, it is okay to not be a part of the consumerist society, but at the same time people amass the arrogance to directly disrupt it; in the real world there are consequences for every action.

I mean, in all fairness, I think StP is another type of anarchist hub. The whole topic of anarchism I could ramble on for a while about as I've looked into the different camps and trying to weigh out any sort of logical application - alas, there is none. It's more of a lifestyle than a way to construct a functioning society, and sure there will be anarcho-(insert camp) communes that pop up and either function or disband, but on the grander scale it's never going to feasible. Which is why a "revolution" or otherwise will not happen.

Living without money and outside the borders of consumer society should not be in the pursuit of such selfish desires, and yes, even, hunger is a selfish desire. There are so many ways to obtain food or things legitimately and without money that stealing should be the bottom of the list. People need to give up the notion of independence and accept the fact we are interdependent.

TL:DR, I share your sentiments, stealing is bad m'kay.

Pardon...Should have extended a welcome :)

I'm an old school guy and I guess the "dog" thing is the lingo of a younger set.
Most of us refer to ourselves as vandwellers ;)

Welcome to CRVL :)

Van Dwellers might be your best description. (although many of us aren't presently dwelling in a Van or RV of some kind)   But that doesn't slow us down from preparing to.

Speaking of preparing,  let me invite you to check out my sites below.  One will help in getting a Van ready and
the other will assist once underway.  From there you can build your Van out to suit your needs.
