I just finish paying my "Unlimited call to US and Canada for 12 month" to Skype and I was wondering if others were taking advantage of this very inexpensive - $26.00/year VOIP (voice over internet protocol) service. I've been using this instead of a landline for at least 8 years if not 10. It comes with voice mail.

All my family is from Canada. I saved a lot since I switched and enjoyed much longer conversations. They offer calls to other countries for pennies a minute. I just looked up China, if you buy 120 minutes it cost less than a penny per minute. It's a good way to save if you need to call international a lot. The advantage of this over their free video chat is that you can call mobile and landline phones unlike their video. All you need is wifi access. An other plus is that if you are in Mexico for instance the Skype Phone thinks you are still in the US so you can call everywhere in the US or Canada at no additional charge. I tried when I was in Morocco, I called my sister in Canada for FREE! I'm a big fan....can you tell? And no I don't work for them ;)

One word of warning....your username will be the name showing on caller id's. It can't be change. I learned the hard way, I used the name of a TV character from my youth...a bit embarrassing sometime.

You can not receive call when your computer or tablet are off but the caller can leave a voice mail.

I believe in: take care of your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves!

Oh Nicole .................
Now we all want to know what the embarrassing user name is ???????

:D Unless you lived in Quebec in the later 50's you would not know it :p Unfortunately that's where I make most of my calls and to people in my age range :(

Have a great weekend

"P......" oops, Nicole

When I was traveling I'd be hopping between countries frequently and having Skype credit at all times is extremely useful and pretty cost effective. It meant that if I needed to call my bank back in the UK or something I could do so without thinking. Does require reasonable wifi on my laptop but other than that, I also highly recommend it!

I still want to know your nickname, I don't care if I know the name, I can look it up, lol. so your saying you can get 120 minutes to China for less than a buck twenty. highdesertranger

Yep, that's what I said, if you suscribe it's 120 mins (2 hours) for $1.19 or $0.02 a minutes if you pay with skype credits. Check it out: https://secure.skype.com/en/calling-rates?wt.mc_id=legacy Type in pretty much any countries and you will be surprise how cheap it would be to call it

I use Skype's video free calls a lot since few of my friends are anywhere near me at this time. I have no complaints about the quality at all. Of course, right now I'm using a home internet service.. not sure how much data skype calls eat up from a mobile hotspot. Of course, the calls could be made from free public wifi I assume.

I have used it for free since it was developed. You can call anyone that has a user name unless blocked or not available.
Past three years I pay to call and receive call's and voice messages.
It is excellent for my needs.
If I call someone I'm unknown and a different # shown on there phone.

I also thought it would be great. However, you need something for a telephone. I have Tracfone and am changed minute by minute to call or receive even for an 800 number, so I would still pay for my phone carrier. Anyway I can get around this? Having a limited phone is my biggest problem. Any ideas?

A few months ago my son just insisted that I would benefit from free skype video calls so he set up my account while at a friends house,  called me and became really aggravated at me when I put a heavy band aid over my PC lens.... Hey just call and think I'm gonna scare folks when I'm still in my nightgown with uncombed hair!......I don't now how many times in his life I have told him  " you will never be too old or too big for your Mama to whup your butt"  and he always responds correctly with a "yes mam"    I did threaten to scalp him and he just laughed and told me he had shaved his head!

Well I have had 1 Skype call...didn't know how to answer.....and bounced off the wall a few times waiting for it to stop.  It sounds like a good thing...now if I just knew "how to work it"          TJB/Jewellann
