In North Carolina once you have established residency (a year?) you can register at committtee college as in state.

The training for becoming a licensed truck driver is than a certificate program at a couple of in state community colleges, and it can be almost completely paid by the state.

So effectively a fast way to get a paying travel job. if you want that sort of thing.

Does anyone know of other states that have this arrangement? For free community college, and good career programs, that are viable for a reboot for income generating needs?

I already knew how to drive a big rig so about 10 years ago there was a guy in Orlando that would rent a truck and give you a road test for your CDL. ($450 back then as I recall. Not a bad business to be in). Kind of nice to have your license by the end of the day.
I imagine if you are in Florida you can find the same kind of deal. Also other states (I'm sure I saw ads for this on Craigslist in Texas and Arkansas).
Even if I didn't have any experience I'm sure I could find a truck to rent for a day or two and pass the test. The hardest part is parallel parking on the blind side. The first time I took the test (about 20 years ago) It helped me a lot to put markers in the parking lot to help me get the angle and curve that's needed.
So, if you're too impatient to wait for a class it is possible to just rent a truck, get some practice and get your license.
It might be difficult to get an over the road job with no experience but I was always able to get a local driving job easily. Good luck!

In washington state, they require truck driving school to get a CDL, or an endorsement from a trucking company. I see alot of ads here that trucking companies will train you and pay for your time training. But you have commit to working for them for a certain amount of time in exchange. I dont know how long they require.

If you want to drive OTR... Don't bother with a Hazmat endorsement (my opinion)!

I just renewed my CDL in March... however, after 13 years, I finally relinquished my Hazmat endorsement.

The cost and hassle of keeping this endorsement, thanks to the passing of the Patriot Act, and the new regulations that followed (national background check and mandatory renewal every 3 or 4 years regardless of "good' driving record).... it just became too expensive and too involved to bother with it anymore (I can always get it back if needed... but I'm very sure I'll never need it again - EVER!).

The Hazmat endorsement is one of those CDL extras that you just don't need, unless you actually haul these materials and/or you find an employer who's willing to pay more for you to carry it (most don't and won't).

I now have a CDL good till 2021 (time of next license renewal) - I should have dropped the Hazmat years ago.

I just gave up my CDL completely a few years ago. Wasn't using it and found out that having one was an impedament to getting my disability through. Also didn't have the physical and not sure I could cheat enough on the vision part to get by any more.

I have been told by people in the field that most people who take the training do not make it a full year. in the high 90%.

I suggest that you get the physical before you apply for the course.

James AKA Lynx

Something like that. At least he is not hiding the fact he is associated with the school.

Sorry guys. Got rid of him.

I have been pretty burnt out with keeping up with the emails 24/7. Over 2700 a month. Last week I decided I wouldnt read them all everyday. Look where that's been getting me! I think I have been spending more time goi g back and doing mop-up :)

I am going to try to get back to reading everything.....meanwhile, I am in a position to read private messages with ease now, so if something escapes me, a heads up would be appreciated. Thanks!
