Greenhorn Mountain Road

I'm in San Isabel NF.  I arrived here Saturday, 9/9/2017 .  I started out on Ophir Creek Road, which ends about 3 miles in.  If you continue on the road to the left (there IS a FS road that continues straight.  I don't know where that goes), the road then becomes called Greenhorn Mountain Road.  This is very helpful because it eventually ends at the base of Greenhorn Mountain at a trailhead.
Greenhorn Mountain is fairly recognizable from the East side of this Mountain Range.  On I25, just as you are passing the exit for Colorado City, it is directly to the West.

I initially followed the road to the base of Greenhorn Mountain.  That was a 22 mile drive.  There are plenty of camping spots there, you just pull off of the road.  WARNING to those with trailers:  there are lots of rocks there, and they might rip the bottom out of your trailer; unless you have a trailer with high clearance.

After parking, and starting to set up, I realized that the surrounding terrain was a very large and pretty meadow.   Then I realized it reminded me of a wind tunnel.
It was at almost 12,000 feet elevation,  2:30 pm, it was 46 degrees F, and the wind was blowing then.  I elected to  forego the wind rocking and rolling my trailer all night long and moved down the hill and in some trees.

I am now staying at milepost 10, about 11k feet elevation.  It does get cold at night, but very little wind.  It was 45 F this morning.  I stayed in the trailer most of yesterday afternoon, because it was raining off and on all evening.

I like this spot, but have to remember in the future to stock up well.  It is 41 miles to the closest town with a gas station.  It is 47 miles to a town with many stores.  Canon City.

I might move closer to a bigger town today.  I have a lot of water bottles that need cleaning.  I'm thinking about checking out 78A outside of Beulah.  Closer to Peublo.

Oh, no cell phone or wifi where I'm at.   If I drive about 2 miles, there is a saddle with views of the Valley on the Western side, and good cell phone and wifi.

Thanks Pat. I intend on seeing that part of the state more and it's helpful to have reviews. I don't know how much longer I'll be here though. It was 31 degrees in Leadville when I walked Max this morning and for some reason Uncle Arthur doesn't like the cold.

When are you looking to head south?

Not sure... I still have a few things to do in my garage.  Staying to the West of Beulah.  Going to do a review of this spot too.  The above review is about a spot that was almost 30 miles to the closest small town, (Wetmore), which has NO stores at all.  I ended up going to Canon City, 47 miles.   One must be prepared!

I am hoping to head toward San Antonio and spend Thanksgiving Day with my sister.  My niece is having an early T'day, and my son and sister will be there.  That's 11/19/17 ....

After that, I plan on working my way west.   Having to stretch that gas $$$$ !   :D

Jimindenver,

If you want to move somewhere warmer,  consider "Penrose Commons WSA".
I did a review of that earlier this month.
I'm NOT there because it's too hot.   About the same as Pueblo,  which is about 20 miles east.

I have woken up to freezing temperatures the last three days so hot sounds pretty good right now. Plus we just got done installing the A/C and I am looking to test it out.

Hi Pat,

Sounds like you're in a pretty neat spot.  Colorado is on my short list of places I want to explore more.

There are so any good places to explore, and camp at.  My goal is to identify as many of those as I can, and review them here in the forum.  I've lived here 21 years; though I've done a lot of hiking and snowboarding, some xc skiing, I really haven't CAMPED that much.  So, that's a different group of places, and I wish to find more to put in my "stash bag".... and to share them with the tribe.  I'll be happy to show you some, bro.

Pat
