Hello Everyone,

In planning for the nomadic lifestyle I may very well spend a few months of the year outside the country (My GF is from Chile).  With that said I'd likely store my Class B or Cargo van at my Brother's house in upstate NY in his driveway.  I'm wondering what steps I am missing for long term storage (up to a year) and I have a few questions mixed in below...

- Put starting battery on a battery tender from 110V from his house.
- Plug house battery system into 110V from his house. (Not sure how this works. Does the 110V get plugged into the solar controller as a source just like the panels provide and that keeps the batteries topped off?  I could use solar alone, but if it is the winter and there is snow for extended periods of time, don't want to burden him with clearing the panels on the roof)
- Change the engine oil.
- Add fuel stabilizer to van's gas tank then top off the tank with gas and drive it around a bit.
- Drain and flush all clean/gray/black tanks.  (Would I leave the tanks empty or refill all three of them with fresh water plus some bleach and RV antifreeze?  What has less chance of beasties growing inside?)
- Drain hot water heater if present.
- Disconnect any water filters and bring them inside?
- Drain hot/cold water lines
- Drain toilet of water?
- Disconnect any propane.
- Put the rig up on jacks to keep weight off tires.
- How do I keep mice/critters from getting in the rig or engine compartment screwing things up?
- Oil change on generator if present and stabil in the gas tank is separate or run it with stabilized gas from the main gas tank.
- Would critters stay away if my brother drove the rig to get groceries every two weeks and would it be best to exercise the rig or... better to leave it alone for the long term as I'd be putting a bunch of "cold" starts through it?

Thanks!

If it's an older rig with a carb, google fogging oil.

Ok, good point, I've done Marvel Mystery oil before on old motorcycles.  Likely it will be fuel injected though.

If it was driven at least 8-10 miles to get it up to operating temperatue every couple of weeks for shopping, you could eliminate some of those steps. That wouldn't be too many cold starts. Longer distance would be even better. The tank would need to be topped up occasionally and that would add fresh gas regularly but you would still need the StaBil. Don't know if driving it occasionally like that, by itself, would keep mice away. For the engine bay and to avoid chewed wires at least, some have recommended leaving the hood open. Not a great idea for wintertime though.

A whole year outside in upstate NY? How far upstate? Is there no way it can be put in a garage or somewhere protected from the elements?

Albany, NY area. I could ask my brother to measure his garage height, but it's nothing special, so I'm thinking any vehicle I can stand in won't be high enough. I could wrap the vehicle in a tarp, but windy days will mess up the paint. I could ask my brother to drive the car to work every two weeks to get it fully up to temperature. I guess I'll have to weigh driving it every few weeks vs. mouse traps/poison strategically placed in the vehicle to keep rodents away.
