Amazing that there was room for a spinning wheel! Some drop spindles would have packed better, and been used while traveling. Maybe someone was using the wheel while the wagon was in motion.

I don't see why you would think you could not take a spinning wheel along. It might not be your favorite one that you use at home. However there are folding spinning wheels made to be easy to take on the road. There is also spinning wheel that can be run on 12V, it is laser cut and cost around $70.
