Not easy for them I imagine, particularly if they live in an area with a high cost of living. Myself, I could live like a queen on $23,000 a year, but I've had a lot of practice living on far less than that.

Without Rent I could get by on that very well and still maintain health and auto insurance. With rent I'm negative :(

Well, by the time someone reaches retirement age, if they stayed put and paid a 30 year mortgage, their house would be paid off. But then in places like New York and Cali, they would have $15K annual property tax bills. That is really the problem. We recently refinanced, but went with a 15 Year mortgage so we will still be "on schedule" if we stay in this house another 13 years. Luckily, Taxes are reasonable where we live, and would equate to about $200 per month by then unless the city gets greedy.

Good friend bought a $50k condo and paid it off. The condo fee is $200 monthly. Taxes are $200. She is happy to spend less than $500 monthly on a permanent place to live. In some communities that is a better option. Unless you can find subsidized HUD Houseing.

In Oregon, I don't believe you can get SNAP if you have more than $2000 in assets, outside of your house and car. I qualify income-wise but have some savings. My mom had minimal SS and worried she would outlive her savings. She had the same problem as me, more than $2000 in savings.
Guess I'll continue paying my own way until I'm flat broke. Btw I'm old enough for AARP but I don't consider myself a senior yet. My prostate still works fine.

I think $2000 is the common limit. They can also require the sale of a vehicle if it's worth too much. They'll help people buy junkers but not help them if they break down. Basically, it's help that doesn't allow one to improve life enough to no longer need help and people wonder why those it that situation don't get out. Logic. SMH
