If you can watch vids, definitely take a few min to enjoy the tour of this boat builder who's turned a shipping container into something very innovative:

Incredible 20ft Shipping Container Home

That's really beautiful! Thanks for sharing! I'm considering making a cabin out of a couple of 20 footers but I'll need the money for the welders for sure. Boat builders do some of the most beautiful wood working I've ever seen.

dang that is nice. I am looking for a shipping container right now for storage. they ain't cheap. to find a private party selling one close to where I need it is next to impossible. highdesertranger

Are shipping containers made to go from boat to 18 wheeler, or do they need to be unloaded at the docks?

Boat to 18 wheeler
I thought about building one into a cabin, it'd last forever, but hot Tx sun on metal? need LOTS of insulation

Shipping containers intrigue me; their application is limited only by your imagination. Picking up on ArtW's comment above, I think burrying one would solve a lot of the heat/cold problems. Dig a big hole; coat the outside of the container with some kind of inceddious tar based thick gooey stuff; plop that mother in and cover it up. A cool hatch out the top; solar panels; and a tomato patch.

I gotta think the hard core prepper types are very versed in this use; probably some good stuff on utube.

Whats the advantage of a shipping container over an old diesel-truck-trailer, especially an old insulated refer unit (for a non-mobile shelter)  ?

Burying a shipping container is a bad idea.   They cannot support the weight of the dirt (maybe not even on the side walls).  Watch Mythbusters episode where they try it to make a bunker and it collapses.

Large culvert works if you want to bury something.

Well, the addition of some steel beams inside, or even a docksplank roof could easily solve the loading issue.

"Whats the advantage of a shipping container over an old diesel-truck-trailer".
1. a shipping container is not 4 feet of the ground.
2. a shipping container is cheap compared to a semi trailer. think of our trade deficit with China all those containers have to go somewhere they all ain't going back to China.
3. with number 2 semi trailers are aluminum, worth 3-6k in scrap value.
4. a road worthy semi trailer will cost you 10k.
with all that said I might have located a semi trailer to use as my cargo trailer box. highdesertranger

Same here looking for storage. Found used containers from a port on the west coast. Reasonable price. Then they mentioned that far from the coast  they would put it on a flatbed and I would to have to offload it. Not something you can rent from Hone Depot either.

Now dealing with someone locally who would deliver and drop looks better.

Yes, a huge straddling crane moves the sealed containers from ship to truck or to dockside and visa versa.

A major container port is something too see.

The container sits flat on the surface without modification. Walk in, drive in.

The trailers have those annoying truck sized tires putting the trailer floor high above the ground. Loading dock height.

Remove the axles and I think there is still hardware on the bottom that would not let the trailer lay as flat as a container.

I know this because I explored the idea of a trailer as opposed to a container.
