As to needing it for sewing, for the basic and inexpensive portable machines which do not typically have large motoes. .you can make do with one of the small inverters they sell in an auto parts store that go into a cigarette lighter socket. Of course if you are just doing a quick repar you can use your car battery battery via the accessory socket. Just dont get carried away and forget it is not a deep cyclle battery.
Read the specs on your lightweight sewing machines regarding wattage. You wil find that it is not a high wattage.device. but unless it has an LED bulb in it you might want to skip turning on the light for very long if you are trying to conserve battery power.
I dont know how much energy the old featherweiights use.
