http://invisiblepeople.tv/blog/2013/05/smart-idea-seattle-vehicular-residency-research-project/

I used to live 30 minutes south of Seattle.

I would love, love, love to move to Seattle.

Seattle is gorgeous in so many ways.

Out of all of the cities I have visited in the US, I would chose Seattle as my favorite.

Seattle is also VERY expensive.

But two years ago, the Union Pacifc had an entry leve railroad job there hiring at $45k a year!

The wages are higher, no state income tax, and marijuana is legalized by the state.

Just had to post the link. An awesome site in general.

So according to the attached interview they use the following criteria to locate a "vehicle residence":

(1) View from front to back of vehicle is blocked
(2) One side window is covered
(3) Unfrozen condensation on window
(4) Window slightly ajar
(5) Items associated with vehicle residency observed
(6) Large amount of possessions in bags

I'm not entirely sure if I'm comfortable with the 30% number they used as a percentage but I suppose it's possible.

Interesting interview all the same. I've considered living in Seattle area as well.

"Vehicle residency, its a crisis."

I don't know about you folks, but I rather enjoy it.

First impression is this is an anthropological study? It needs to be looked at with an open mind as I was put off by the video at first. Times have changed and freedoms are so rapidly being taken away.
The fellow with the outreach program is on the side of vehicle residency. He cited some of these people have 20 page write ups about their vans (etc) by the police. Sounds like his program understands homelessness, or choice of living in a vehicle should not be a crime.
Local churches are stepping up to the plate to provide safe parking and even food prep and storage for those independent folk.
Seattle does seem like a good place compared to other areas.

I live just outside of Seattle and it is a great area. Mountains right next to oceans, green trees everywhere. No income tax but a very stiff sales tax (about 9.2%). It is definately a city of money though...when I visit my parents in the deep south, I am shocked at the low cost of living compared to here. Then again, they call a 200 foot hill a mountain.

I lived happily in Seattle for 16 years but would not enjoy it now. Too expensive, too much traffic and too much crime. And, yes, because the city is soft on 'vagrancy' and has a temperate climate, it is a magnet for homeless folks from across the country. Think of it as an upscale version of Slab City.

BTW, when I lived in my RV, I called it 'fulltiming'. Ah, semantics!

Yeah, Seattle has some aggressive homeless people.

I would only really live there if I had a plot to park somewhere away from the centers of population.

IGBT, Texas has a %10 sales tax...

The cost of living is up to you in the end.

Well, cost of living may be up to you, but my parents rent a 3 bedroom condo on a golf course in the deep south for $500 a month including utilities.

I pay like $500 a month in real estate tax!
