Does anyone know if the sand around the tent and other major areas is hard packed or soft? I will have my ATV but am considering bringing my mobility scooter which for sure is not for off-road. I can walk about 50 yards then it is time to let the hip regroup.

If you are asking about the RTR, very fw of us will be on sand. It is held on something called "desert concret" It is the bottom of an ancient lake bed and it is hard packed rock. Many people see it for the first time and ask if it is man-made--it isn't. Unless the tires on your mobility scooter are very tiny, they MIGHT work.

The first few years the RTR was held somewhere very rocky, that's a big part of why we moved it here, much easier to get around for those who need it to be easy.

I'm not sure if you can estimate the size from this picture. I don't plan on using it much, but to get to the area in and around the larger areas I thought it might be better than my ATV.

If I had mobility issues and had a choice of bringing only one of an ATV or the scooter, I would bring the ATV. If the scooter is going to take up space 'inside' the vehicle, I'd say just leave it at home....I truthfully don't think you're going to find it that useful and will take my more time, energy and space that it's worth.

The area that we use is fairly large and you might want to park further away from others, or you might just not be able to get a parking spot close the center of all the activities.

The scooter is going to need to be recharged, the ATV just needs gas added.

The ATV will let you get out and explore the area where the scooter will mean just going around the RTR area.

The ground, while harder than concrete is still fairly rough with stones so the scooter is going to be in for a really bumpy, difficult ride. Karen, while fiercely independent (yes, you are Karen.... :D ) still needed a push here and there in her wheechair and it's equipped with off-road wheels. Pushing a scooter is not so easy.

Since you can walk 50 yards or so at a time, you will be able to drive the ATV around and then walk to the camp circles, etc.

It would also let you carry a lawn chair much easier...packing lawn chairs on those scooters is difficult.

Just remember to drive the ATV slowly...same as the vehicles have to do...if you're creating a cloud of dust behind you, you're going TOO FAST, dammit.

I would say bring the ATV. yes please drive slow though camp. last year a few people thought it was a race track. highdesertranger

I've seen those scooters, but don't know anything about them. A couple of years ago, I overheard part of a conversation between two women about a scooter and rough ground. She said, "Do you think scooters could have larger wheels put on them like they do for pickups?"

And that's a good question: Can they?

OFFROAD SCOOTERS! HERE WE COME! ZOOOOOOOOMMMM!

And there's Gunny, getting another ticket at the RTR...

I can buy bigger tires from the manufacturer for almost 600 for four. The VA paid for the scooter, they ain't going to pay for me to go four wheeling..The tires on there now are harder than my ex-wives heart so I will just leave it at home. Rob

I was mainly wondering tires being adapted from something else. Sometimes you can, and other times the fit just isn't possible.

Eventho the surface is "desert concrete", there still plenty of rocks, both loose and semi-exposed making for a rough ride on small wheels.
Soft spots can be nothing more than places where the surface has been disturbed by foot traffic, causing enough resistance to slow or even stop a scooter.
Possibly of more concern would be damage to the drive system and such due to the gritty dust.

(This is just my take on it as a Southwest native).

I can't do much in the way of modifications, since the VA gave it to me it technically belongs to them. I think. From what the manufacturer (Golden Technologies) there is a specific type of wheel and tire for it. I looked on ebay and found nothing.

I've got the atv and I can mind my manners with it. I plan on parking away from the crowd since I use my genny a lot. That and the fact I am not much of a 'joiner'.

Thanks for the thoughts Trainchaser.

The VA has medical suppliers, such as LinCare, Rotech, and others. They supply special beds, scooters, my oxygen and related equipment. They also do repairs/replacements. I'm not sure whether the supplier retains ownership but I will find out, as I need to call about an issue today.

I asked the guy in prosthetics when I got the okay for the scooter if when I croak will they send someone out to retrieve it and he told he doubted it, not worth too much used and they VA won't issue used stuff. Mine works fine, it's just a rough ride on anything other than smooth concrete. Beats the alternative and I do appreciate the wheels.
