Running From Stomach Flu

While I don't have my fishing/boondocking vehicle yet, it sure would have come in handy this week while on in Central Texas. My relatives were falling to the stomach flu and if I hadn't had my brothers vacation home to go to I'd have had to return to NM.

For starters, there is no such thing as "stomach flu". Most of the time, you are suffering from old-fashioned food poisoning of varying degrees. I suggest that you buy a box of anti-diarrheal pills to keep on hand (I keep a Loperamide based anti-diarrheal - usually one pill is all I need - but you may be able to use a Bismuth subsalicylate which I am allergic to.

Getting real influenza is so painful. The one thing I hate about gastroenteritis is having the runs every 30 minutes so I always keep a good stock of bismuth and pills. It's been a real problem for me with the diarrhea ever since my Galbladder got removed.

Okay i'll go with influenza. I dropped by the store and bought things in case I got sick. Remembered everything but the other end meds. Washed hands often. Fortunately, I wasn't infected and had a good time.

The fact is that norovirus, what is commonly called 'stomach flu', is NOT food poisoning. It is very contagious and cruise ships seem to be especially vulnerable to outbreaks. It is characterized by vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea and has nothing to do with influenza, which is characterized by fever, severe aches and lassitude and, often, respiratory involvement.

I posted "MOST OF THE TIME", not "ALWAYS". The link I posted (if you bother to follow such things) noted the various causes of gastroenteritis along with ways to prevent it. I politely omitted the echoli. I did not think it was polite or correct to insinuate that bigsallysmom's relatives didn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom (a very common cause of gastroenteritis). It's amazing how many people do not wash their hands after going to the bathroom. That includes food service workers (including the waitstaff).
