I keep seeing repeated posts, hearing comments, etc. about "Ehrenberg not being an option".

This is NOT TRUE!  Ehrenberg is NOT closed and IS available for disbursed camping.  I was recently in the Lake Havasu field office getting my gimpy park pass and was not told of any changes.   All they did was bust up a big group of us, that's all!  There were no fines or charges, no closures, nothing.  That doesn't mean there never will be but honestly, the rangers have been way more than fair.

In fact, if it wasn't for a grouchy, dramatic camp host up by Havasu I probably wouldn't be down here now but I don't appreciate being treated like crap.

But hey, don't take my word for it.  Call the BLM field office and find out for yourself.  And watch Bob's video about it.  It's "old" now but just as hysterical.

Really, the sky did not fall on Ehrenberg.  It's cool.

Who is it that starts those rumors? It's the rumor mill & telephone game, it always sounds worse than it is, until someone tests it out. Good job!
Thank you!

I didn't think Ehrenberg was closed, they are just enforcing the 14 day limit. True?

yes that is true. they started enforcing the 14 day limit. who knows for how long they will enforce it. highdesertranger

If you have a clean camp off of the main roads, then there will be no problems.

It is funny listening to snowbirds talk about “the rubber people.”

That is funny! Rubber People, I like it. We fall down and just bounce right back up.

Well, it's no longer an option for spending an entire winter, anyway. :D

You also want to make sure that you're far enough back on the plateau that you're behind the brown post signs.

There is some state trust land closer to the interstate that is not marked at all except on the maps. Camping there requires you to have the state trust land permit.

With so many wonderful places to spend a couple of weeks, I'm not entirely sure why anyone would want to spend the entire winter there anyways..yes, it's convenient but I just spent the last month touring parts of southern AZ - Yuma, Ajo, Organ Pipe NM, a section of Coronado NF, Buenos Aires NWR, Nogales, Tuscon, probably missing a few stops. And that's not to mention Holtville and southeastern CA. Tons of places and most of them, to be honest, are a whole lot prettier IMO than Ehrenberg!

Yuma ,its cheaper and you can find work , lots more to do and not near as wind and just better weather ! j.m.o.

Unfortunately the subject of the “rubber people” as the rtr folks are called was brought up in a conversation when I was in a laundromat and talking with a couple who told me that they were camped at La Posa North LTVA. They said they had camped there every winter for years.

I asked them why North and not South. The South has water and a dump station and they are in a 5th wheel and you have to pack up and drive several miles and sometimes wait in a longgg line.

I asked them also about crime in the North because I had heard some people were getting ripped off there. They told me that people think it was probably the “rubber people” and that there had been a group of probably thirty parked out there.

I think they are getting the “rubber people” mixed up with the Quartzsite beggars which are MANY. They are a group camped here and there and definitely have a presence also in La Posa North. They appear to be extremely dirty and camp in tents or dilapidated looking busses. I saw some pretty trashy campsites. Nothing wrong with tents or busses I am just pointing out how they are camped.

Apparently there were a bunch that were sleeping in the wash there on the edge of the LTVA also and were rousted out. When they left I hear the thieving stopped.

Anyway, I think I got them understanding the difference between the two groups (I hope).

Every time I hear “rubber people” I think of those old Gumby and Pokey dolls.

I just spent a few windy days at Ehrenberg.  It is definitely NOT closed.  They are just enforcing the 14 day limit.
