I got another idea recently from Pinterest for uses for 2 liter bottles. I can't post a pic here yet, but will throw one up on my blog.

I think 2 L. Bottles are the new duct tape :) lets use this thread for ideas on how to use these babies!

My newest use is food storage, for dried beans and such. These bottles are air and moisture tight. A bottle has almost 4 # of navy beans. Ive got lentils and beans and sunflowers in mine.

they are great for storage of sugar and flour

have used them for sugar for years, in the old days when I had alot of planted aquariums, would use them to produce co2 and funnel it in for the plants. hmm.. so I guess fermenting works too <grin>

And -- lets not forget --

( click photo )

Here is the link to the procedure:

http://www.earthineer.com/content.php?blogid=1574

All my favorite stuff in one video, except the duct tape:

Bottles, swords and real milk crates!!!!

I prefer the rectangular plastic containers that nuts and some candy come in at costco to store flour, rice, etc. Indent at one side and a large mouth with a screw top.
Blars- I love them too. I don't use them for airtight storage because they often are not. I just did some testing of some I have, including 2 that I bought at Walmart in the housewares dept. when submerged in water, they leaked. I like the square ones for tea bags, bouillon cubes, packets of soup and cocoa though!

When you think of the pressure soda bottles were made to withstand, it makes them good for stuff prone to attract bugs.

Rollin- soda bottles (or PET bottles) do not have the nasties that some plastics can leach, such as the bottles with Bisphenol (they now are big on advertising BPA free). The article I am going to link here shows that some studies show that antimony may leach from PET bottles, but it is not thought to be significant. The most important point is that storing dried beans and grains will not allow leaching, so it is safe!

http://health.usnews.com/usnews/health/articles/070726/26petplastic.htm

Another great use for 2 liter soda bottles:

Filled with hot water and tucked under the covers they make long lasting bed warmers. Mutt and I stayed comfy at -10 degrees in the van this winter, all. iChat long.

I've made minnow traps out of them to catch minnows for fishing bait.
I've used them as planters for veggies and and temporary herb garden containers.
I make ice in them. lasts longer and have cold water to drink.

Not 2 liter bottles but I once made a sculpture out of 16 oz. plastic bottles once. Was made of over a thousand bottles.

Saw a video where 2 liter bottles are used as ceiling lights. they are filled with water with a bit of bleach in it. small holes cut in ceiling, insert bottle in hole and caulk around it. the water relects and refracts the light. was pretty cool.

Skooky stole some of my thunder! I have seen these used in the Philipenes. I personally store rice, sugar, salt, beans, dried herbs from the garden just to name a few things that I store in 20 ounce to 3L soda bottles. I have also discovered that a 550 round box of 22 Long Rifle ammunition stores perfectly in a 20 once soda bottle providing a durable container for the ammunition as well as air and moisture proof containers. I also keep a number of them filled during the winter for a source of drinking and cooking water should the pipes freezer or we have a major power outage. There has to be a gazillion uses for these bottles, you just limited to your imagination!

hmm.. going to have to try and boil me some water in a plastic bottle. I prefer a tea kettle for tea, something about the whistle that says "tea time !" When camping I have a small enamelware pot (about a pint i think) I use for that. perfect size for 1 meal 1 person ramen, rice, making tea, oatmeal, macaroni, etc. etc.

Lunatic ~ didn't mean to steal your thunder. I saw that idea and some day when I have a couple acres and an earth lodge that is how I intend on lighting it. Now I'm thinking of a way to use them with those little solar sidewalk path lights. hmmmm.

I've also made bird feeders out of 2 liter bottles.

Bottles are great for storing craft such items, beads and stones, etc.

I used to have one full of marbles and pencil nubs. Was kind of an art thing. I was trying to visualize something about losing my marbles and creativity. Aha !

There can be only one!

I'd like to sneak in there one night and un-screw all his caps <img src="../images/boards/smilies/eek.gif" alt="" align="absMiddle" border="0" />

That house is great. I've seen greenhouses with walls made out of bottles but never a house !<br /><br />haven't made one before but I have seen water tight containers made by cutting the plastic end where the caps is off and hot gluing 2 of those together.Unscrew the caps put in matches, etc, whatever and... ta dahh a floating waterproof container. instructables.com often has good ideas for making things.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />

Have we been watching Mythbusters again ?

How long before you launch yourself into the nabours back yard ?
