We all make mistakes...some way bigger than what happened to you. The cool thing about this forum is that people are pretty understanding and helpful. Also there were a few who were offering to go way outta their way to help you. It sounds to me like the worst part of this deal is finding out that there's some super sh*tty people out there willing to take your money.
I've made some big mistakes but for the most part things work out. I accept that I can't win all the time. Granted a couple hundred bucks is painful but you'll find a way to work through it.

I stand corrected.  That is worse than my first attempt.

Lee the cheap welders like Harbor freight sells are not worth the metal they are made out of.  however the inexpensive Lincoln welders that Home Depot sells are pretty good for light welding up to about 1/4".  I have used 3 different ones and they all worked well.  highdesertranger

I have a crappy HF welder. I use it for little things, and I am only learning. Perfect little tool to learn on when you get them cheap enough. I did my hasps for my tongue box.

I  have heard of tongue studs, but a box?  Kinky! :p   ;)

I just use JB Weld for most projects.  Occasionally I have something I take to a professional welding shop.  For $60 an hour it is worth it to have it done right the first time.

The little HF welders are useful for small projects, craftwork and such, but they are limited on the thickness of material they can join.  For heavy duty frame work and suspension work, you need the pros.  I have a close friend who has been welding for years, and has built large towed BBQ cookers as well as working on vintage tractors.  He also does decorative items like 'yard art'.  I take my welding jobs to him.

I've been gas welding all my life, did a little stick welding, all self taught. Paid off recently when I needed to do the brackets for my solar and the battery cage frame mounted for my two T-105's. Pro results, nope, but certainly solid. As they say pro welders don't need a grinder LOL, I have a grinder :)

So- more on the story- After politely waiting until they had finished moving their shop to a new location.. I respectfully and clearly stated the problems with their work, included photos, and my expectations for either correction or refund of monies paid.
I have received ZERO response.. and (through a mutual friend) heard that I am being a female-dog and totally unreasonable for my demands. This is such a pile of bovine excrement. If you are going to offer services for money, and provide poor workmanship- you should take responsibility for your screw ups. Really reaffirms my faith in humanity- NOT.

I really don't like being the bad guy. Ask anyone who really knows me, I am the first one to give second chances.. but this is ridiculous.

Oh, I did. Thank you. Even went by in person. Just wishful thinking - hoping the butchers wouldn't make me pay Twice for work...
Your friend is a card! Great guy. :)

Yeah...Peterman is quite a character. :p

So...what's the update??

Did you ever get this rack fixed up the way you wanted??

rack- nope, not yet.  Complete Radio Silence from the shop that took my money and butchered it.
After the holidays, there may be more consequences.. more will happen.  I am sick and tired of being treated like an unsuspecting idiot.

I may be wrong, but I don't see anything good coming out of escalating a bad situation.Life will never be perfect.Maybe it's time to stop beating a dead horse.Good Luck.

File a consumer complaint now.  Demand your money back in it.  Meanwhile have the job done elsewhere.

This is just "business." The law provides for dishonest merchants like this; it's called Small Claims Court. File against this merchant for a full refund plus court costs. Probability is that before his date of court appearance he will contact you with all your money, held out and begging you to take it.

More importantly, get your stress and emotion out of this issue. It's bad for your health. People like this exist in life; consider it a good lesson to you. File and get your money back; or don't file, but for your own sake move on.

Sometimes you get so close to the issue you miss the bigger picture; I know, I e been there too.

All that small claims court ever did for me was cost me more money/time lost. YMMV.

Other than that, I agree - move on. You're burning up good energy for a bad experience.

I'm pretty sure that I have "lost" at least $150,000 to shady customers, tenants, contractors, "friends", and relatives over the last 50 years.
I'm a lot happier when I focus on the great things that have happened in that time.

BTW- I'm really impressed with you and your van so far.

Go to Small Claims Court, file a case and then drop them off a copy of the notice. When you are in the courthouse ask about Default Judgement, if the defendent doesn't show up you win the case.
