When/If I get the ability to install my rack, I will certainly upgrade the bolts.

thanks for the experencial tip!

those brackets can be saved. the ugliness must be remove, then redone like you want. which I would be hesitant to have the same shop do. at this point I would go strait to the owner and talk to them. then make a decision on if you want them to do the work. highdesertranger

Well- after 4 days lead time- these useless excuses for stupid wastes of space cannot manage to provide a receipt. NO- they are not getting any chance to touch my property again.
I will hopefully get my receipt tomorrow, and then request a refund, along with ALL the reasons Why.

I am SO angry right now, I can barely breathe!

Can we get some details?

Who, where, and how much?

There are a couple people near you that can help. I used to live in that area also, and have some friends in the DA's office in Green county.

Springfield Oregon -
$99 for the rack purchase
$100 for the butcher job

I have a few recommendations on folks that can maybe fix it for me.. After I get the receipt and hopefully a refund.

I may even go so far as to get an estimate from a 'repair' shop and present that to the butcher shop as well.

I know people in the Ugene area.

Some very UN-friendly people. (when they need to be)

Maybe they could help here!! :D

Wrong Springfield.   :(

I would take it to a welding shop and get an estimate.  Then go back to the butcher and demand he refund you the $100 at least.  More if he has damaged your rack beyond repair.

The Oregon Department of Justice will be extremely interested in hearing what you have to say about shoddy workmanship and someone doing a cash only business.

Now that I finally have a receipt in hand- I am drafting a letter to request a significant refund.
Listing all the things that are unacceptable.

More as things develop.

Well,It's only a couple hundred bucks. Not worth having a heart attack over. With the energy you have put into this, you could have earned the money working with much less stress on your health.

Must be nice to have an income stream that makes $200.00 an "only"

Some of us do not have that luxury.

I agree with Gypsy. besides if no one ever calls these guys out they will just keep screwing people over. highdesertranger

Yes,it is nice to have an income to live on.My point is that we all get taken sometimes. It is inevitable. But you have allowed this man to steal your peace of mind along with your money.Sometimes for one's own sake it is better to just move past it.

Sometimes you need to stand up for what is right.

Ripping off those that are unable to afford it should never be an option.  :s

I hate to say it, but did you give them a drawing? Makes a big difference. The picture in your mind and the picture in their mind may be totally different.

No excuse for the shitty workmanship, but always make a drawing. The more detail and dimensions, the better.

The shop I took my RV to to make my exhaust system for my generator totally screwed it up. I said it looks nothing like the drawing...

long pause.

Drawing?
Yeah, the drawing I gave you guys.
Looks in file. Oh. this? Yes, that. That which I discussed with the other counter guy three weeks ago (another story). Oh, I didn't know about it. The tech in the shop was never given the paper.

Soooo, we go to the shop and go over my drawing with the tech in the shop. one week later I get 90% of what I asked for. Good enough.

The sheetmetal shop worked from my drawing too, but screwed up which side to taper the skirt for the generator. Another 90% job. Does anyone do good work anymore?

This thread is making me think all the harder on getting a good inexpensive welding outfit and learning to do it myself.  Y'all know that old saying about "If you want it done right....."    :-/

I honestly didn't think I needed a drawing.
The guy of the shop-pair discussed the job with me.
They didn't build an entire rack.. it was not that complex. Just extend the existing uprights and replicate the box-rail mounts from the original rack onto the extension. Not Rocket Science.
I did the prep, per his instructions and Our agreed upon 'design'. And then they screwed it up by doing something Totally different. ...And building part of it backwards, and a lot of it is unnecessary and unpaintable.. etc..

I am not just going to let this go. They have essentially Stolen $100 from me by producing an unusable product.

Lee the cheap welders like Harbor freight sells are not worth the metal they are made out of. however the inexpensive Lincoln welders that Home Depot sells are pretty good for light welding up to about 1/4". I have used 3 different ones and they all worked well. highdesertranger

I've found that a drawing is almost always needed to convey an Idea when something is to be fabricated.  I often present carpentry ideas to home owners via description alone and they do not get my meaning, and it is not always obvious that they do not.  But when I do a simple drawing, or use an example of what I have in mind, they do get it, and either agree or disagree on proceeding with the option I presented.

Too many times I had an Idea rejected only to have it come back as
'It would have been neat if you could have done it like this or that."

"I originally recommended doing it like this or that and you declined!!!"
 "Uhh, that's what you meant?"

This happened enough times with one client that they now  tell me to do what I think is best.  But,  I still present them with options as new ideas strike me, but have pictures or drawings ready so they can see what I Have in mind, in their mind's eye.  They can't draw my word's in their minds, and these are not low IQ individuals.

Sucks about the racks.

I do not have much experience welding, but it is with a 220v Lincoln electric wire feed.  It takes me a while to find the right feed rate and heat, and Doubt my welds would pass inspection on anything important.

I'd certainly not get the harbor freight version.  Too often shitty tools lead to a shitty result, regardless of skill level, but low skill level and shitty tools guarantees a questionable result.

just for kicks
