I've found that a drawing is almost always needed to convey an Idea when something is to be fabricated. I often present carpentry ideas to home owners via description alone and they do not get my meaning, and it is not always obvious that they do not. But when I do a simple drawing, or use an example of what I have in mind, they do get it, and either agree or disagree on proceeding with the option I presented.
Too many times I had an Idea rejected only to have it come back as
'It would have been neat if you could have done it like this or that."
"I originally recommended doing it like this or that and you declined!!!"
"Uhh, that's what you meant?"
This happened enough times with one client that they now tell me to do what I think is best. But, I still present them with options as new ideas strike me, but have pictures or drawings ready so they can see what I Have in mind, in their mind's eye. They can't draw my word's in their minds, and these are not low IQ individuals.
Sucks about the racks.
I do not have much experience welding, but it is with a 220v Lincoln electric wire feed. It takes me a while to find the right feed rate and heat, and Doubt my welds would pass inspection on anything important.
I'd certainly not get the harbor freight version. Too often shitty tools lead to a shitty result, regardless of skill level, but low skill level and shitty tools guarantees a questionable result.
