I was looking around for a shop that could extend my roof rack for mounting solar above the old fiberglass top on Hank...
Friend of mine works for a "custom shop" about half an hour down the road.  This shop is restoring her husband's truck and the HE of the shop is a military friend of the husband's..  Seems legit, right?

I drop off the rack and we discuss the design.  C-channel, attached to the existing box rail points, extend to 15", and replicate the box for the rails.  A couple triangles for reinforcement at perpendicular points.  Simple and elegant.  HE tells me "I'll have it done in a couple days, I'll give you a call."

I thank him, give him some money, and leave.

The next day, I realize he and I both neglected to get my phone number for him to call.
I message my friend (who works there, and works with the She of the shop at a 2nd job) and tell her what happened, and can she give HE my number?  She says yes, will do.

...then.. radio silence..

A week passes.. I attempt to contact these people..
Apparently they have a string of excuses.. they were out of town, it was her birthday, they got sick...
yeah

I politely request, from my friend that works with She of the shop, a phone number to contact them...  And get a number that goes to a voicemail that is full and hangs up.

I am then told to text her.
Which I do.
and still no response..

2 days later (on Thursday) I get a text that starts out  "I'm not ignoring you honey, I'm sorry for not responding.  I was out of town all weekend and didn't get home till almost 2 and I had just enough time to go to work."

She says all that is left is the holes for the bolts that hold it together.. but the charger for their drill is packed and they haven't found it yet.
(??!? hand held drill? Battery powered??  Why not a Drill Press? )

She says that they can just not drill the holes, and discount me some money.  They will leave the rack parts outside the shop tomorrow for me to pick up whenever I want.
(OUTSIDE!!??? Really?)

I tell her that I live about half a mile from where she works her 2nd job.  Could I pick them up there?
Sure- she says.

So I arrange to pick up the parts locally.
Now, remember the clean simple functional design we discussed?

I get to the Bar she slings beer at, and check in with her.  "Oh, they are outside tied to the back of my bike."
(??!!!?)
..ok

Went out, and this is what I found.

You may note several things.  Fundamentally they are UGLY.  They are not designed at all the way we discussed.  They used open box and extended it all the way down.  Which makes for an excellent debris catcher and is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to paint.  You may also note that many of the welds are burnt, the cuts are shoddy, and many of the welds are barely welds at all.  There are Many points where there is gapping between metal surfaces, and places where they tried to patch over shoddy welds then grind off the evidence.  The holes that they did drill are different sizes.. and one is Oval. Some parts are crooked, there is inconsistency in the structure.  And half the rail boxes are both short, and constructed Backwards.  The outward facing sides look horrible.
Did they delegate this job to a drunk 7yr old?

Needless to say, I am so pissed I can barely breathe.

Step one- get a receipt 'for the business expense.'
Step two- request either an immediate fix or an immediate refund.
Step three- if no fix, get quotes from several Trusted shops to repair and present these butchers with a bill.

I hate to be a bch, but damn people..  this is a total botch job.

Wow. IMO you have every right to be bent out of shape. That is a really amatuer looking job. Probably worse than the "fab" work is the fact that this will destroy the friendship. If you make a fuss, which you have every right to, then you're labeled and avoided or discarded, and if you don't make a fuss then you would most likely harbor resentment. Tough deal all the way around.
I'm hopeful you can find somebody to fix the mess.

The last job I saw looking like that was in my first day of metal shop!   :s

Find a decent machine shop that has the right machinery.   All that "custom shop" is, is a handyman that failed as a handyman.

I would be pissed also.

If you are anywhere close to me(20 mi south of Branson Mo)come by and we'll redo the whole project.I've got the drill press, wire feed welder, etc.

You're in Springfield, aren't ya??

I know a machinist who can do a great job up there if you're interested.

PM me. :)

GRRRR!!! Are they a legit business? I'd be posting reviews all over the 'net: yelp, google, yellow pages and rip off report.I send a letter to the BBB and the Chamber of Commerce.

I'd make your friend aware of their business practices. She may not want to send to her friends there

First - I want to get a receipt for paying cash. And they may owe me a bit back for not drilling the holes.

After I have procured Proof Of Payment.. Then, believe me, all Holy Hell will break loose.
But considering their shoddy work, I would not want them to retaliate by Billing me. Considering the cash was untraceable.

They can't bill you if you make sure the receipt says paid in full... Should I ask how much this cost? Really poor workmanship at any price.

Looked like a home hobbiest with a shiny new Harbor Freight welder.  You were an early "practice job".  I'd be mighty PO'd.    :dodgy:

Well,I've heard that anybody can weld with a wire feed. But after seeing this job,I don't believe that anymore.

damn what can I say. "Custom Shop", "Restoring a Truck", yeah right. I would hate to see that truck. you have the worst luck with shops. highdesertranger

The She of the shop says I can pick up a receipt tomorrow. Been asking since Friday, when I got the rack.

...sigh

And do I dare give them the option to "fix" it?
Or just demand a refund for an essentially Unusable product.
I do not want this abortion of a weld job leaking rust down the sides of my van!

And are the rack mounts even salvageable? They butchered the original box-stock pretty badly.
At the worst, I demand they buy me a replacement roof rack and start over.

And more delays on my build... sigh x 2

and, now that the rains have resumed... I find water leaks.
One being at the back top window.
Hmmm.. must try to find appropriate gasketing...

Gasket acquired, old stuff removed, track scraped scrubbed and cleaned, new gasket installed... All in a fair drizzle.

New business idea: Drowned Rat Van Repair.

wish you luck. i put up my rack today, its got a cheap ladder rack (2 poles/clamps), the rest im making with treated lumber. Not the best solution but one i can afford. The ladder rack is kind of disappointing, one of the tightening bolts sheered in two when we tried to adjust them the third time. Had to do some grinding and used thicker bolt. ill replace the others too when i can. Guess its better to find this stuff out before you are flying down the road.

The first thing I did was to upgrade the bolts and use lock nuts.  I spent less than $10 and I am 100% confident nothing will move.  :D

the bolts that come with these DIY racks and things, are made from peanut butter!!! ^^^

heading to the hardware store and getting some decent grade 5 replacement bolts costs very little, and the peace of mind they offer is PRICELESS!!!

VLC...have you considered using old bed frames instead of lumber?? You can get them from GoodWill stores for $5

i hadn't thought about that, interesting idea. I think its too late now its up there lol
maybe if the wood doesnt work out.

You'll likely have been to the shop by the time you read this. My reaction is that any shop that would do such lousy work and give it back to you as "done" is NOT going do much of anything to compensate you. Though, of course, you need to to make the demands. I would not trust them to do any further work to try to fix it, unless they can tell you they have a different welder to do the job. Try to get the money for a new rack and find a new welder. Are you close to any of the folks here who offered to help?
