They now want to see proof that you actually live there, like a utility bill or a rental agreement. I'm running into that now, trying to register my vehicle. Some people get around that by renting a room for a month. Some states are worse than others. South Dakota will let you register your vehicle with one night in a motel or campground, just bring the receipt! Other states want actual proof of residency. The "Real ID" thing is going to be a pain in the ass. I resent it. I resent anything that infringes on my right to be anonymous.

There is no such right.

Rights only exist when the powerful are willing to create & enforce them.

These days they don't tend to do so for everyone, just themselves.

New rights can be proposed & created if enough powerful people (including those who bother campaigning protesting voting) get fired up enough to offset those that object to the changes.

But on most basic privacy issues the trends on that battle aren't looking great, four steps back for everyone forward.

Remember the invented / interpreted right to privacy from our SC is premised on the reasonable citizen's **expectation** of privacy.

In a way Snowden's confirmations that our gov is willing to routinely break the law, has weakened our case, most people, quite rightly, have very low expectations indeed.

This is one very rare issue where extremes on both left and right can agree.

For example, facial recognition should just be banned full stop, no effective protections exist.

Unfortunately average citizens just don't care, assume the gov and corporations won't be "too evil" abusing their tech-enabled powers.

John--this is one of the reasons I live off the grid, as anonymously as possible. Generic truck, generic trailer. Facial recognition--the idea terrifies me. Look what they're doing with it in China, for Pete's sake. We live in perilous times.

Just to say it. When I first came to California, I was in an educational program. If you are "in school", as mentioned earlier in this thread, you can have a "home address" that's not California (Or Whatever State). You can get your Real ID and stay registered in your home state for as long as you are a student. And you can let that roll all while having a paid for private mail box for local mail in CA - or whatever state (you put that local CA address on your resume if you are trying to work local to CA). Also, Passports are the magical universal "ID" and a good thing to have even if you are not leaving the country in the near future.

I got my real ID when i was renting a room. Then I updated my address with the DMV to my "current mailing address" (the place where my mail goes that is, as I live in my car). Really at the end of the day all you need is one friend with a local CA address. Send a bill or two there (You can use a bank statement even, just change your address and wait for one cycle of billing). bring that to the DMV, get your real ID. Wait a couple more months, update the DMV with your "new" address (private mailbox or whatever). Your real ID doesn't stop being a "Real ID" because you "move" and they are not going to reverify if you do a change of address, they are just going to update your address.

DMV accepting a given commercial service address is not a counter example to my point.

To be honest the DMV is least of your worries, just the minor Real ID hiccup is what is bringing the larger legal domicile address issue to the attention of a larger audience.

The DMV is just one consumer of your legal domicile address.

It's private corporations, financial institutions, insurance etc, and all the other dozens of gov agencies that want you real residential address that are the bigger problem.

And those more challenging consumers should be given the same address as what's in the DMV database.

So again, I stand by my previous statements, feel free to take shortcuts but IMO you will likely regret it.
