so a few of you asked about a prospecting seminar/class at the RTR.  if enough are interested(see poll,  I hope) I will talk with Bob about doing one.  any topics you would like to see covered post here.  highdesertranger

I knew you could do it.

About the prospecting, I'm not sure I can vote. Put me in for "reservedly curious."

I already voted "for" and was your first vote :D  I won't get there until the 6th at the earliest.

I seem to be the second "yes" and there are no other votes right now. But it is early. LOL

I'm sure you'll get a crowd. For those of us who boondock.. who would NOT want to know what the stuff looks like and how to look for it even as an idle time hobby. I'm not going to buy equipment, but I'd like to see how some things work.

I think it would be a good seminar.

As for buying equipment, the best advice I can give is to buy a cheap gold pan (they are less than $10).   After that, only buy equipment you can pay for with the gold you recover  with the equipment you already have.

Well count me in I have a backpacker model metal detector that always travels with. small pick and small shovel as well.

it was others idea. then Bob asked if anybody wanted to. so I can't take credit. highdsertranger

Can't see a poll link on the tapatalk app version of the forum but I would definitely be attending the seminar if you give it.

If it happens, hope it is on a saturday, so this working stiff can attend.

It sounds like it's settled, we'll have a prospecting class. It'll be at 2:00 pm, HDR, let me know when you will be there and I'll pick a day.
Bob

Bob I sent you an E-mail earlier, but I will be at the RTR on the 6th or 7th. let me know. everybody else, if there is something specific you would like to see covered let me know right here on this thread. highdesertranger

Where do I get the magnet to help pull out the gold? Seriously, I have panned on the yuba river but with friends and we usually have a couple beers and it turns into a skinnydip fest. Perhaps a small list of materials that work would be helpful, thanks for taking this on

If you only had a pan and a shovel, what pan would you have?

How to read the land to see where gold might be.

Where can I pan?  NF on the river/creek?

A seminar on finding a location to prospect that has reasonable gold deposits would be excellent.

I have watched the gold shows where they test pan raw gravel before it has gone through the wash plant and get several bits of gold per pan.   I have yet to find a club claim or open area that has anywhere near that type of gold.

I have not tried Arizona or Nevada though.    Bama got some decent looking gold panning on his last trip (1/4 ounce from panning on the river?)

There are GPAA claims right there in Quartzsite and the local club owns some claims and does outings. It would be very easy to go and actually work a claim while you are there.

The local Rock Hound club is really an excellent club and many people come here just to participate in it. $15 dollars to join and they offer many classes and have a clubhouse very well stocked with all the lapidary stuff you cold want. All you have to do is take the safety classes to use it.
Bob

ok as far as the class here's what I have so far,

1. where to go, this will included claims, open areas, public areas, clubs.

2. how to find gold, this will include your basic prospecting tools and how to use them, how to sample, simple record keeping for sampling, what to do when you get the fever.

3. I will have different prospecting gear on display and give hands on demo's for anybody interested.

feel free to make anymore suggestions of what you want to hear about. highdesertranger
