I am a novice regarding electricity and need to know a lot more.

For example, I keep reading that excessive draining of a battery will shorten its service life. Does there exist something like a switch to sound an alarm or automatically cut off an electrical system when a discharging battery reaches a danger point?

yes they do make automatic disconnects. but they draw power themselves and are another point of failure. could you give us some more info on your electrical system. like Battery set up, charging source, draws, etc. I think what you mean by excessive draining is taking the battery below the 50% point. is that right? highdesertranger

Most here use a voltmeter and try to keep the battery above 12.2v under light regular loads. Dropping below this is acceptable under slightly higher loads, as long as it rebound to this 12.2v range after they are turned off.

I just found this product that has a programmable alarm for both low and high voltage: Edit Appears to be visual not audible. IDK

There are also products which automatically disconnect loads when battery is drawn too low but I forget their brand names, but these do have a parasitic draw and can be defeated through ignorance of their function, negating their efficacy in such situations

Just as important as not dropping to too low a voltage is actually being able to reach full charge as often as possible, or at least every 10 deeper cycles to the 12.2v range.

Overdischarge followed by incomplete recharging will kill any lead acid battery quickly. This failure is not the fault of the battery manufacturer or retailer, and should NOT have to be warrantied. But are anyway.

What other product can one purchase, abuse intentionally or ignorantly, and get warrantied?

Doing so just drives up battery prices.
