Meeting my needs for camper AND stationary home use is the Striker antenna by MOHU. I cut the cable cord in my tiny stationary home (624 ft2). I get about 10 HD local channels. This varies with proximity to large cities.

When I hit the road it travels with me in case I chose to watch TV (rarely). It's flat and very portable. Application for home marketing developed out of a military product. Genius.

I use the US TV Tuner from Hauppage. It comes with a little extension antenna but I replaced that with one of the flat antennas. I use it mostly for news, weather, and the local PBS station.

back in 2012 we had a fun time creating a DIY fractal HDTV antenna. We hooked it up to a USB TV tuner to watch shows on the laptop. It worked just fine but aiming it towards a tower also helped.

It is a fun project to play around with. We got all of the components to make the antenna from hardware and computer stores. There are lots of websites showing how to do this project as well as youtube videos.

Making useful things for yourself while on the road is a great hobby activity. Sometimes it saves money, other times not much in the way of cost savings. But always educational and entertaining even for the children if they travel with you. If you have never made any simple electrical projects before this one is a great project for beginners. But the antenna theories are there for the science and radio nerds to play around with as well.

Yes, once on the road I will have so much time to explore.  We were homeschoolers when we lived overseas.  Motto: I learn better by teaching myself (also the title of a HS book).

You've got the spirit of a homeschooler.
