I want to put some plants in my van but not sure what would work. Need something hearty that can withstand extreme temperature. Figured maybe someone on this site would know what can be done. Something I can eat would be neat

Edibles will be a tough call. Cactus/succulents can probably take the temperature extremes within reason.

I have a Nepthytis plant on my console. It tolerates low light, it tolerates all the summer and winter conditions I put it in, and it tolerates me watering it only once in a while whenever I remember to.

:)

Do you like radishes? How impt is it that this is a full grown plant? Because radish and broccoli seeds sprout into radish and broccoli sprouts pretty quickly. They are pretty and also pretty tasty, and in the case if an ag inspection they aren't too much (time or money-wise) if you have to throw them away. Or you could just eat them, too.

Do you stay in warm climates year round? Does this plant have to deal with whatever heater you have to heat your van?

They can have my houseplant if they want it. I'll get another one. I wanted a Prayer Plant anyway but couldn't find one. :)

Lenny I want your Nepthytis then. :D But maybe it's accustomed to being on the road. I'm planning on getting off the road, though I don't know when that will be. Hopefully sooner than later. It may live in New Mexico, or it may live in Arizona. I may even go back to California. Haven't decided yet. My gig in New Mexico came to an abrupt end.

That sounds like a tough call. Couldn't a van get to like 130 degrees?

Agree with AMGS3 about sprouts, if you're in moderate temps. They don't germinate well in cold, but seem to do fine in moderate heat if you water frequently. And they do grow fast, are super nutritious, and provide some nice crunch and high water levels that make them refreshing as any salad type stuff is on a summer's day.

I always move with the weather, so it never faces any temps that I don't face too. Not too hot, not too cold--juuuust right.  :)

plants will add humidity to the environment. Humidity and mold can be difficult to manage in a van, without plants.

And as HDR mentioned, above, crossing into California, with any type of vegetation, will be prohibited
