I couldn't think of a good title for this, so I apologize, but I'm wondering what the laws/rules are for selling say, firewood, out of the bed of your pickup, or handmade (non-food) items.

I'm trying to think of ways to earn a little extra cash at Quartzsite this winter, and I know you can't collect firewood in the desert, so I thought if I had room, I could bring some in and sell it to people who don't feel like going back to town for it.

Has this been done to death? Do I need a permit?

A quick answer on the firewood is that there are a lot of restrictions because of damaging insects. Depending on the area, it could be not moving firewood between counties. Crossing state lines gets even more iffy. Some major spreading of some tree killing insects has happened because of infected wood being moved into an uninfected area.

I am only guessing about Q being someplace where people might sell little things and items "between friends." ;) ;)

If you are buying commercial firewood locally and driving it to camp sites to sell at small mark-up, there should not be a problem. If you are cutting / collecting wood on your own, then could be problem if caught.

Are you thinking of selling wood at the RTR, specifically? That might not go over well. A lot of people donate wood for the community campfire. I don't think selling it in camp would be well received. Maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe there would be a way to do it that wouldn't offend the people donating wood they've bought or brought.

The handmade stuff is ok. Some people barter and gift what they bring. But, I've heard of a few people selling their crafts. I'd be really thoughtful with regard to what you might be able to sell. Remember! You're selling to a bunch of minimalists. Nobody wants for much

Thanks, Cyndi. You saved me from stepping on toes! I read what Bob wrote about wood for the group campfire, already being provided, but that if you wanted a fire of your own, you'd have to go into town for the firewood. I didn't know there was a group effort of donation going on.

As for selling other things, I'm not very crafty, so that was just a thought. I would love to learn to make jewelry, but that might happen down the road.

Thanks for having my back!

That's what I was thinking; buying commercial, small markup. But I'll definitely wait to see if there's a need for it, before putting out any cash.

Did you notice you have a reputation now, too? I gave it to you for your helpful link about the pests in firewood. Now show me your swagger. lol

LMBO

No, I hadn't noticed I'd gotten a reputation yet, but it was inevitable I guess. :p

I'll be seeing my daughter later so I'll practice my swagger and see what she thinks after she stops laughing at me, err with me? Nah, she'll be laughing at me. Once I get it down pat then I'll show my swagger. hehehe Ha Ha Ha I probably ought to have it taped for AFV because it will be funny! Might even twirl my cane! Hmmm, I think I'll get a walking stick instead---easier to twirl. LMBO

*quietly assembles padded outfit and hat for the inevitable one person 3 stooges routine* BONK!

LMAO! You're awesome. I hope we get to hang out at RTR one of these days!

Fanx. I keep being told I should take it on the road. :p Not sure that's what they mean though. heh

I'm hoping to figure a way to make the RTR next winter even if I'm not in my traveling home yet. Maybe rent a popup camper to tow somewhere closer to there than here. I'll be one of the quiet shy ones around the edges until I get to know people. :)

But, back to the regular scheduled topic.... I've been tumbling money ideas around in my head too. I don't sew, but was thinking that someone could use that to make a little money---for window covers, custom sheets to fit odd sized mattresses, and so on.... I also thought about bartering cooking nice meals for things I can't do myself.

Figuring out what you are good at or what you would like to do playing to your strengths would probably be the best way to create an income---so I'm clueless since it's hard to garden in a van. You may find the camp hosting to be enough to your liking that it will cover expenses for time off at RTR. :)

Yay! Adventure's on its way!!!!

I hope you get there. We won't leave you standing on the sidelines for long. This will be my first time attending, so I am bound to be a little shy, too. But there is so much to learn, that I can't wait to start absorbing everything I can.

Start up expenses are going to make this a tight year, especially with my student loan payments, but I do hope that once I get everything situated, I can settle into an inexpensive routine, start paying things off, and still having enough to live on between camp host seasons.

If some one buys firewood and transports it to a camping area and wants to sell said firewood. Why would anyone get upset? You don't have to buy anything. The donated fire wood is not worth less. I just don't get it.

Are we talking about any camp area in particular or are we talking about the RTR?

At the very least, any camp area would require a permit, as does Quartzsite.

Specifically, the RTR is all about sharing what you have. At least it was in the past. Maybe that's changed. I didn't attend this year, so I don't know.

People share their knowledge, their mechanical and technical abilities, their extras (the give away blanket). I don't have any of that so I cook. I've fed a lot of people at previous RTRs, happily so. I've also bought firewood and donated it.  2 years , friends brought a truckload of wood and donated it.

Also, because the RTR is on federal land, I'd be willing to bet there are a number of other hoops one would have to jump to get a vendor permit.

I just would hate for someone to haul a ton of wood down, with the thought of selling it and be disappointed, or worse.
