This is an image from Truck Camper Magazine. They had a series of people who sent in images for how they made rear decks for their campers. Some slid fully or partially under. Some folded up, etc.  Each year the magazine holds "mods" contest an you can see those results online at their website.

That's pretty cool! We have the tailgate on ours which is useful as a step and table.

That's not a bad idea at all if one rolls it up when done, and easy to store and carry. That particular sponge rubber works well as a tent floor too.

Maybe a cheap piece of artificial grass over it would alleviate the UV issue.

I think the UV issue wouldn't be an issue if you unrolled the sponge rubber for use each time, and then rolled it back up, while cleaning it, to be stored safely. It sure would be softer than most other mats, and lessen the impact of rogue stones. or sticks on the ground on your knees, or legs.
