That's pretty cool! We have the tailgate on ours which is useful as a step and table.

Maybe a cheap piece of artificial grass over it would alleviate the UV issue.
 
I think the UV issue wouldn't be an issue if you unrolled the sponge rubber for use each time, and then rolled it back up, while cleaning it, to be stored safely. It sure would be softer than most other mats, and lessen the impact of rogue stones. or sticks on the ground on your knees, or legs.
