Hello:

I just posted my intro in the newcomers section and here is what I am looking at
http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/rvs/5125147225.html

I have asked
is it 1978 or 1973 the add shows both
can I drive it away
have you located where the leaks are
how is the plumbing situation
does it have black and grey tanks

I know I can't ask for much at $500  it sounds too good to be true.

I"m looking for opinions and further questions I should ask.

Thanks

It looks like it's been sitting for a loooooong time. That's the worst thing in the world for an RV's systems.

Personally, I wouldn't want the first one, it runs on propane. That's fine if you are sticking to a area where you can get it filled up but I would think it could be limiting. also I think I would spend a bit more to get something in better shape. Those old Class C's don't go for much and some have been well taken care of. Last thing is no matter what, I'd look for a rig that hasn't leaked. leaks are the death knell for RV's for a reason.

Should you check it out and like it, really check it out. Every system no matter how much they insist it works. Look for where the leaks are and push in those areas and along the seems, corners and under windows. Anything soft or spongy is rot and or mold. Take it for a GOOD test drive. get it up to speed and let go of the wheel cautiously. does it run straight. does it stop straight. I know here everything has to have a emissions test, I'd never buy a vehicle without it or the safety inspection if needed.

A good inspection is going to take time and if you don't know about RV's, you might read up on them and their systems some. At least know what you are getting.

go check it out,see if the ceiling and walls are rotted out,if not and it runs and moves you really cant go wrong for $500 canadian

also the first one has 16.5 tires, hard to find and expensive. watch out on the old dodges I have seen some where the frame ends at the back of the leaf springs. get under and look. highdesertranger

Thanks for the comments folks...

I just got a reply on the unit, someone is looking at it tomorrow, sounds like it may be gone.

I am no mechanic or carpenter but I am a quick learner and not afraid to tackle almost anything, my biggest concern is tools as I sold all mine with the move.  We have lots of "backyarders" here, I think you refer to them as "shade tree mechanics". I also have a good friend who is a mechanic. There is so much help out like in this forum and you tube.

Specifically: Almost There I did look at both of the units you listed, the first is a no go as I would pay a big premium on the ferry system so I must stay under 20 feet.  I really like the 2nd unit what worries me is only being able to stand up in the entrance, but I have emailed them a bunch of questions .

GSFish if it doesn't sell tomorrow I will purse the oil leak situation, is there a reason why I wouldn't want a propane system they are very common 'round here, I hope that doesn't sound snarky as it is a legitimate question, I have little little knowledge of propane systems.

If anyone cares to comment on the 2nd listing from Almost there I would appreciate it, I'm a bit confused, as it says it has been parked since 2009 yet the tranny was inspected last year and it has new brakes so have asked for clarification and the interior height.

Gary, Jim and HDR I missed your posts, thank you!
thanks so much

What kind of budget are you looking at for both purchase and immediate investment in repairs?

Keeping the length under 20' almost certainly limits your choices but I can understand with ferry prices going nuts.

Have you thought of buying a regular van with a high top on it and doing your own interior? You'll get a whole lot more bang for your buck, stay under the 20' size and can build the interior as you want it.

My budget is around $1000, the longer I wait the more I can add to the budget.  I'm thinking that in the fall/winter there may be more bargains out there.

Almost There, yes I have thought about converting a van, I followed building Arabella" from one woman to another you have mad skills girl.  You are part of the reason I think I can do this, your comments like "google and you tube' and "if it doesn't work try plan B" made me picture doing it. Also following One Awesome Inch has been great.

There is also a cheap truck camper, am going to check it out this weekend, should I post about it in this thread or truck forum?

I know I am all over the map with regard to which vehicle I want...The last year has been rough, dealing with a brain injury and PTSD has been one hell of a ride.  My biggest fear is home security, low income, no job, big dog = no place for you.  If I had a home on wheels no one can kick me out or tell me to get rid of my old grey dog:)

Whatever vehicle it turns out to be for sure it will be purchased after being posted here for questions and comments.

thanks again

Why thank you - I am sincerely glad that I can be an inspiration to others.

One of the things I went through in deciding what type of vehicle to find was a process of elimination. It took some serious thinking about the lifestyle I wanted and what my costs were going to be to decide that a full size van was the way for ME to go. I was like Goldilocks - this one's too small, this one has no 'living space' - only sleeping space, this one uses too much gas, etc. etc.

Maybe put on paper all your different choices - Class A, B, C, van DIY conversion, truck camper, car and small trailer, cargo trailer conversion. Do all the pro's and con's and then let it rest in your mind for a while. Once you've decided what you want then and only then can you make an enlightened decision of what is right for you. Some people like to switch vehicles on a regular basis. Me, I like to try to ensure that what I've got is going to be a long term plan. Lady Arabella should last me well in to the next decade.

It took me a while to find the right vehicle at a price I was willing to pay. It's hard not to get discouraged when you're looking but buyers' remorse is worse IMO....

Keep in mind that you're going to get more bang for your buck with an empty vehicle than one that has already been equipped. And there's nothing wrong with using an empty vehicle to camp OUT of while you outfit it to live in. Most if not all of the pieces needed can be found either in thrift shops or Dollarama! I scored the other day when I found enough vinyl laminate flooring to do the van at the Habitat for Humanitys' Restore - $30.00 for the two boxes that would normally have cost me close to $130. with taxes in.

One thing I did when looking at vehicles was to make a list of what to look for. I surprised/dismayed many a car salesperson when I showed up with a clipboard and a check list... :D

When looking at a vehicle don't ever be afraid to take a first good look at it and then haul one of those mechanically inclined friends or a licensed mechanic back to look at it. And if you don't do a good job at bargaining, get someone with you who will  :)

By all means, don't be afraid to post the link to anything you're looking at, either in one thread so you can keep them all together or separately.

Drivers' license first and I'd suggest getting your passport as well!

Cross homeless off your fear list - you and the dog will find a place to call home!

16.5's are not expensive, but not a lot of choices. Pep Boys has them. I'd prefer not to have them, I switched them out for 16's on my old motorhome.

Propane doesn't have as much energy as gasoline. It takes more propane to do the same work as gasoline. Back during the oil crisis, gas was more expensive than propane, so propane was cheaper to use. Now Propane costs more than gasoline, so you get the worst of both worlds, (you use more, and pay more). I called my local fuel station and asked the price for both. Gas is $2.65 a gallon. Propane is $3.35. So the economics of which is better fluctuates with the prices of each.

One gallon of Gasoline is equivalent to 1.4696969697 gallons of propane. As per http://shecenergy.com/calc/fuel_energy_equivalence.php

wow what area are you in, around here propane is much cheaper than gas. in fact I don't believe I have ever seen propane more than gas. unless maybe if your are talking those exchange bottles. highdesertranger

keep looking none of the three appeal to me, your one, might be a problem with the propane, you are limited, to where you can run it, I am not on top of propane vehicles but my guess is that it will have some maintenance issues re seals if it has been sitting my guess is also finding someone to work on it can be an issue. more so in remote places. the lenght and width of it are ideal. the second one is too big in my opinion. but much nicer looking, the third one is from Alberta, you are lucky to live on the west coast so take advantage of that and don';t buy anything that has been outside of the lower mainland for any length of time. patience it will come along and you will know it is the right one. I know almost there mentions a bare bones high top and that is fine if you want to build but there a many good deals on fully finished campers that are well worth it. Personnally if you can raise your budget to say 4or 5 thousand you would be far better off in the long run. If you buy too junky you end up with large repair bills which in the end cost as much but you still end up with junk.

I definitely agree with getting your driver's license first but instead of a passport, I suggest that you get an enhanced driver's license.   That is the route that I took.  One less thing to keep track of.

You only need a passport if you are going to fly

True, I keep forgetting about them because once you've got a Passport the EDL procedure makes you start at the beginning all over again with all the documents - pita, easier for me to just keep my passport up to date!

I keep mine because I never discount that I may need to fly back home in a family emergency.

Since it was posted 30 days ago and is still available,  I am guessing that there are major things that are turning people off.  If you are not ready to do a lot of work on it yourself (I imagine that getting parts/supplies in the gulf islands will be a slow and painful process) I would pass.

Thank you everyone:

Well neither RV's emailed me back so they are gone. All round good advice regarding a propane vehicle.
Almost There thank you for your awesome response, I appreciate the time you took to lay out a sensible plan
BC Guy, Enhanced DL is a good idea
Flying Kurbmaster, you offer good advice but no chance I can raise 4 or 5K, my bank is chasing me for 80K for a house I no longer own, and I'm too broke to afford bankruptcy.

I don't want to come off as a negative Nellie but my situation is tough, I feel a bit like Bitty (I wish she would post, kinda miss her "can do" attitude)

Must get a driver's license, can't get that without a vehicle to practice on so vehicle has to be #1 priority. I have to be out of my place by September 30 so time is of the essence.  I don't feel like I can wait around for the right vehicle, just a good enough for now one.

On a good note I checked out the camper today, it is on the property I'm currently at.  It is tiny 8' long, 6' wide by 5'3" high so I can't stand up in it, but in great shape for its age.  I checked for signs of leaks, nothing, no soft spots, poured water over the roof and left it pooled, will check again for any dampness tomorrow.

It has been in its own shed for 10 years so well protected from the environment.  It is basic, has a dinette that makes into a bed, a bit of over cab storage and a crappy shelf that was used as a counter.  I would rip it out & redo and on the opposite side there is room to build in a bit more storage.  It has a 2 burner propane stove that is old but in good shape I will see if I can change to fittings.

Best of all it might be free.  The son of the deceased owner said he would ask the rest of the family but doesn't think anyone will be interested in it. The son & his wife are super nice people that I have become friends with but I don't know if the rest of the family will go along with free so may have to pay something for it.

Thanks again

Free is really good OGD!! Fingers crossed for you!

From your description it's a camper top for on a pick up truck??

If it is it will also will dictate what type of vehicle you're going to have to find but that's okay. Pick up trucks are a whole lot easier to find than a good van because a lot more of them have been used as personal vehicles as compared to commercial use over the past couple of decades.

If you can find and post the make/model of it, the weight of it can be found out for you so you know what vehicles will work with it. Pics would be good too!

As to declaring bankruptcy, maybe that can be a reality too. Once you're not paying rent, the budget changes drastically and what was once unaffordable becomes possible.
