The good news is my camper van came with a porta-potti, yay! ... NOT. Now for the bad news. It stinks and it stinks. And did I mention it stinks? I've tried everything I can think of to disinfect it. Even my latest concoction of bleach-water-baking soda added to the top and bottom tanks don't seem to help even after driving for a little bit of agitation. I get within a few feet of that toilet and it knocks me out !(◎_◎;)

So, I'm waving the white flag. I give up. Apparently this is a problem much bigger than me. I want to get rid of it!!! So my question is this: does anyone happen to know how to properly dispose of a porta-potti? I can't really call the city and have them come out and pick it up at the curb when I have no "sticks and bricks" so I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks all ^^

You could drive it to the dump? Or just place in a large trash bin somewhere. Destination is the same.☺

I am offended as to why I am being called out in the title of this thread.

Lee R. would be able to help since he was a Captain in the navy.

Mr.LooRead, on the contrary. I'm sure you are quite sweet smelling. And forgive me if this question sounds naive, but wouldn't a navel captain be more of an expert on navels and not so much on pottys?

By the way, I do so enjoy your Florida related posts ^^

Are you asking how to dump the contents of the porta-potty down the toilet or asking how to throw the whole unit away?

With most porta pottys you 1) seperate the bottom holding tank from the top seat, 2) attach the hose, 3) open the valve 4) dump it down any pubic toilet.

To dispose of the whole unit you would dump it, clean it up good and either give it to a thrift store or throw it in a dumpster.

I've thrown away two of em.....never again!

Just get a 5 Gal Bucket, trash bags and a bag of kitty litter!

I'd give the offending Gadget a really good swabbing out then heave it into a dumpster. Some enterprising homeless person (non-vanner type) will have it set up in his fridge-box in short order.

akrvbob, the thing has come to the end of its useful life as no manner of cleansing and flushing it out seems to help :/

It looks like the dumpster gets the popular vote here. Thanks everyone for helping me out with this!

I like the small square size of my porta-potty, but I don't use it in its intended manner. I put disposable trash liners in it before I use it (#2 only) and then double bag it and dispose of it right away. It's basically the same as a 5 gallon bucket but more compact and comfortable.

I've been down that road of emptying the lower section of a ripe porta-potty and don't want to go down it again.

I'd heave it into the dumpster WITHOUT any disgusting swabbing! I think the idea here is to get rid of it ASAP. :s

if it stinks you need new gaskets. the top tank should never smell only water is supposed to go in that tank nothing else, water only no chemicals. the bottom tank is air tight unless the gaskets are bad. highdesertranger

66788, you and I think alike on the subject. Unfortunately the pot had a previous life and it will cost a lot to replace it. Oddly enough it's not a "potty smell" and I discovered it's not coming from the lower chamber. The odor is coming from the upper chamber that holds the fresh water :/

Isn't this a fun conversation? :D

The top tank should only have fresh water in it. Could be it just needs sanitizing, any water container can get slime growing in it. I would pour about 1/2 cup of bleach in it, let stand, and flush it several times, if you want to keep it.

yes I posted this before water only in the top tank, no chemicals. highdesertranger

I never use the top tank. It's easier to flush and clean with a 2.5 gal pump up black sprayer that doubles as a solar shower.
