I have a problem with the concrete bricks being used for the stove. They can't with stand the heat.

Compassrose,

Thanks for providing that link. It's always interesting to read on off-grid info.

For those not yet familiar with them, here are a few additional off-grid info. sites:

1. http://www.off-grid.net/ (A larger, somewhat commercial site)

2. www.offgridsurvival.com (Has a survival focus to a lot of the material, but off-grid, too)

3. www.offthegridnews.com (In addition to off the grid news, they have a nice "how to" section)

I found this video about navigating in the wilderness. The guy doing it has over 900 videos about wilderness living of all sorts. If you hike - he has some good videos about finding your bearings and never really being lost. Great learning channel.

Starlight, thanks for that link on navigation...and to the Pathfinder School videos, overall. Yes, Dave Canterbury is a force of nature, with boundless energy. He seems to me a "wildman" "man's man" with plenty of hands-on knowledge. One can learn a lot from his videos.

An interesting contrast to him in style and temperament is Kenneth Kramm. For those not familiar with him, he's a calm and gentle man, who actually brings along a teddy bear to his camping adventures. :s But he knows a lot, and teaches it well. He's sort of like the Mr. Rogers of survival/camping teachers. You can see many of his videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/KennethKramm/videos?view=0&flow=grid
